When I first stopped drinking and started attending recovery support meetings, I would hear people say they were grateful for their addiction experience, and I thought to myself, and sometimes even muttered under my breath, "that's crazy!!" I also had someone say to me, "I wish you a slow and painful recovery!" Well, technically, not directly TO me, but at a recovery meeting. Quite frankly, I viewed this person as a total jerk (although I used a much more colorful descriptive at the time) 😉 and I was pissed 👿 But now, I totally GET IT!! Because, as Dr. Sharon says on Ted Lasso, "The truth will set you free, but first, it's going to piss you off!" 💯 Truth! I have grown and learned SO MUCH from my pain! More than I have ever learned from my comfort. That doesn't mean I want to be in pain or that I enjoy pain, but I have learned the benefit of painful experiences, difficult circumstances, and even difficult people. I have realized there is tremendous value in challenges. Even those experiences that seemed like the worst possible thing that could have ever happened have ultimately resulted in blessings. There are always yet unrealized blessings on the other side of challenging, painful experiences. You may find it hard to believe that this could ever be true for you. A feeling of gratitude for your pain and suffering?! Impossible!! Well, I didn't believe it either until it started to happen. When my lens, my view of the world, started to shift and change. Now, I seek to learn from everyone. I am open to all the lessons of the universe I am meant to experience (painful and otherwise). Some I handle with Grace and some I do not, and that is a part of the lesson as well. So, if you're struggling today with a painful circumstance and you're finding it hard to believe your situation will get better, let alone feel a sense of gratitude, try adding the word "yet." Try saying, "I can't imagine this yet," or "I haven't been able to do this or feel that yet." It's a small word that can make a world of difference 💪
