Just 15 days into 2024, many of us are struggling to keep up with those aspirational new year's resolutions. I can't think of a better time to remember the legacy of a man who boldly fought against injustice and called out those on the sidelines. Today, as the New Year's Resolutions fade, let us remember that justice-for-all is not a goal we can afford to give up on as the year progresses. Allyship and advocacy must be more than beginning-of-the-year resolutions. They must be at the heart of all our efforts in life and career. #martinlutherkingjr #justiceforall

It was an honour to represent Qld mental health consumers at the announcement of the National Mental Health Consumer Alliance by the Assistant Minister for Mental Health, Emma McBride. This is a significant milestone for mental health consumers in Australia, where the voice of consumers will be strengthened by national representation championing human rights, social justice and systemic change. Approximately 42.9% of Australians aged 16-85 experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime (ABS 2022). This equates to roughly 11.8 million people. As a consumer, it is so important that our healthcare environment empowers you to make your own choices and take control of your own recovery. The evidence shows fostering autonomy and shared decision-making in mental health therapy leads to improved outcomes. Consumer autonomy and respect for consumer control over care and recovery processes is essential across our health ecosystem at all times. I know from my own experience as a consumer, carer and working in mental health service delivery that you are the master of your own recovery. The National Mental Health Consumer Alliance works hard advocating for your right to consumer-led mental healthcare delivery to ensure people with lived experience have a strong voice in shaping mental health services. Become a member of your state consumer peak organisation to be heard and become involved in shared growth and learning opportunities that help contribute to positive change. A great insight for all the advocates or students in their law school or fresh graduates. Standing up for others not only gives you strength but also prepares you for the future fights (not about violence).
