Speaking to Sebastian Schlüter Jacobsen at ShippingWatch about this interesting move, I said that: "this acquisition fits right into the network of customers they have" - and probably also that of wanted future customers... #containershipping #supplychains #integratedlogistics #acquisition Xeneta insights.
MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company’s recent acquisition of French freight forwarder CLASQUIN can be interpreted as a sign that the large container shipping company has a growing interest in land-based logistics. However, it is not yet known whether MSC is in the process of launching a real logistics business like its competitor A.P. Moller - Maersk, or whether the shipping company is still focusing heavily on sea freight in the style of Hapag-Lloyd AG. ”They are playing both sides of the fence. The acquisition makes a lot of sense in the sense that when you have the world’s largest fleet, you have to be really confident if you go one way or the other, as seen with Maersk and Hapag Lloyd,” says Peter Sand, Chief Analyst at Xeneta. #shipping #freight #logistics #globaltrade

”I would be surprised if the market comes down within the next two years”. He refers to the fact that there is a shortage of car carriers. Although the global order book now stands at around 200 new ships and the current fleet totals around 750 ships, a large number of cars equivalent to the capacity of 100 car carriers are currently being transported in containers. ”This is simply a necessity because there is not sufficient tonnage available. Transporting cars in containers comes with substantial disadvantages,” says Nikolaus Schües, CEO of Reederei F. Laeisz Firstly, it is impractical for cars to be transported to container terminals instead of car terminals. Secondly, more cars are damaged when travelling in and out of containers. And last but not least, given the route through hot and humid areas, the cars do not smell as new as they should.

📣 Mainports benefit from home carriers and dedicated terminals 📌 A survey of ten major container #ports in Europe, North America and Asia shows that the overall size of a carrier group is not always directly reflected in a carrier’s ‘traffic exposure’ to each port. 👉 Unsurprisingly, the world’s largest container line MSC, is in fact the biggest customer at seven of the ten ports surveyed. This is however not the case for Qingdao, where COSCO takes the first spot, or for Hamburg, where the locally headquartered Hapag-Lloyd is also the leading customer. 📑 Alphaliner’s research, summarized in the chart above, confirms that ports not only benefit from the presence of a strong home carrier, but also from allowing container #shipping companies to co-own or operate dedicated #terminals. ❗ Get advanced industry insights by subscribing to #Alphaliner Weekly Newsletter here 👉 https://bit.ly/2Na5HOA #liners #maritime #containership #ports #carrier #containers

Drivers and cargo at risk: EU needs more safe and secure truck parking IRU joined forces with the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) and the ESPORG vzw to call upon the European Commission to continue its efforts co-funding safe and secure truck parking areas in Europe for the period 2025-2027. Additional funding is critical, not only to enhance cargo safety and security, but also to significantly improve the working conditions of our drivers, ensuring that they have the necessary infrastructure to succeed and thrive professionally. As we look forward to further modernising and expanding these essential facilities, we call on Member States and regional authorities to join us in this crucial initiative. Together, we can strengthen the backbone of the EU economy – the #roadtransport sector – and make it a more attractive and sustainable option for current and potential drivers. Read more ⬇️
