I volunteered at the 'Beach Clean Up Initiative' organized by the local environmental club, which resonates with my passion for sustainability and conservation. As a team leader, I was responsible for coordinating a group of volunteers to collect trash and debris along the beach. During the event, we encountered a massive pile of waste that required collective effort to remove. I collaborated with fellow volunteers to devise a strategy, assign tasks, and work together to clear the waste. Our teamwork paid off, and we successfully removed over 100 bags of trash! The experience not only made a tangible impact on the environment but also taught me valuable lessons in leadership, communication, and collaboration. A lot has happened since we first shared the Cornerstones of Collaborative Governance for a Just and Equitable Future in August 2022. In 2023, we developed a Community Assembly model for Washington State, and this year the City of Seattle and State of Washington are actually piloting community assemblies! As defined by the Just Futures Community Leadership Committee, a community assembly is “a participatory democratic process that brings people together to articulate community needs, assess solutions, and mobilize for action, with a focus on those furthest from economic well-being.” Community assemblies represent the kind of deep, deliberative democracy we need to create a Washington that fosters well-being for everyone in every community.

Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation This theme has become a struggle for believers throughout the world. Starting from Vancouver Canada in 1983, a shared vision around environmental sustainability was echoed to become the action of all believers. Maintaining nature which continues to be beneficial for humanity, human interaction and communication with nature which builds each other up, continues to be echoed, reminded and implemented. Optimism about the success of this vision is still being fought for. Various elements of society, both government and non-government organizations, continue to strive to make this happen for future generations. There are still many who do not agree with this idea. And they continue to exploit nature for short-term economic interests. Even though the economic struggle is actually for the future of the heir generation. Let us together preserve nature, environmental sustainability that is beneficial for our children and grandchildren. build concern for fellow creatures of God. Good Luck. cps/

Board Spotlight: Elke Weil-Millan Elke is the Principal/Owner at Panoramica Strategic Communications LLC. She has lived in Wake County for 26 year and is an NCSU graduate from the College of Natural Resources (Go, Pack!). She is a wonderful addition to our board as a strong advocate and organizer, having helped create spaces for Hispanic and Immigrant Community members and continuously push for change for those communities. How would you describe the Triangle region to someone who doesn't live here? A growing metropolitan area with great opportunities and vibrant community. Why is WakeUP's work important for the Triangle? It's one of few organizations that focus on climate, housing and transportation. If you had a magic wand, what is one thing you would change about our community? More civic engagement from marginalized communities If you were only allowed one sentence, what would you say about the importance of future planning? We can't manage growth without proper planning.

🌱 Blacks In Green's Sustainable Square Mile system implements their 8 Principles of Green-Village-Building introduced in 2007 to achieve BIG’s theory of change: that only a whole-system solution can transform the whole-system problem common to Black communities everywhere; that ultimately self-sustaining Black communities everywhere would change the narrative of what it means to be Black in America; and that our communities would thereby become synonymous with beauty, prosperity, comfort, and joy. In May, Naomi Davis, Founder and CEO of Blacks in Green joined #Circularity24 to explain how Blacks in Green’s Sustainable Square Mile system is building thriving communities.
