We all spend a great deal of time listening to what people are saying. At least, that is the impression we give. Much of the time the words we hear trigger a reaction in our minds. This means we have switched off to what the person is really saying and are following our own train of thought. Are you your worst critic? I know I am. I don't need anyone else to tell me; I've always been good at doing it to myself. When I was finally able to stop long enough to listen, I was appalled. I say things to myself I would NEVER say to anyone else. How about you? Do you hear the things you say to and about yourself to yourself? Do you even try to stop or change what you're saying? The bigger question is, who taught you to say those things to yourself? I'm pretty sure you didn't come in thinking that way. Beating ourselves up is a learned behavior. It's so unconscious most of the time you don't realize it's even happening. What finally helped me was finding an outside pair of eyes and ears to help me navigate the traps my mind kept setting. I learned how to see it and change the story I had been telling myself. I know from personal experience that it's more challenging to do it alone. I tried for years, and I didn't get anywhere. As we step into May, I'm dedicating this month to the intention of kindness to self—a reminder to treat ourselves with the same level of compassion and understanding that we readily offer to others. This journey of self-compassion is about finding balance between being our own greatest fan and our own greatest critic. In a previous post, I touched upon the importance of striking this balance—acknowledging our strengths while also recognising areas for improvement. Being kind to ourselves means allowing grace to make mistakes and providing ourselves with the room to grow. After all, we're only human, and mistakes are an inevitable part of our journey toward progress and success. Kristin Neff beautifully captures this sentiment: “So it’s definitely not the case that self-compassion leads to complacency and inertia. Quite the opposite. By losing our fear of failure, we become free to challenge ourselves to a far greater degree than would otherwise be possible.” Just as we carefully choose our words when interacting with others, it's equally important to be diligent and practiced in how we speak to ourselves. The dialogue we have with ourselves sets the tone for our self-perception and ultimately influences our actions and outcomes, both professionally and personally. As we navigate the complexities of our daily lives, let's strive to cultivate a balanced inner dialogue—one that offers encouragement and support in times of challenge, and celebrates our achievements with kindness and gratitude. Working on building your self-esteem can help you establish healthier boundaries. Patterns of Behavior: Sometimes, people fall into patterns of behavior where they always put others' needs before their own. While being kind and considerate is important, it's also crucial to prioritize your own well-being and happiness. Remember, being kind and compassionate is a wonderful trait, but it's also important to take care of yourself and ensure that your kindness is reciprocated and appreciated.
