🌍🌎🌏 Today is Earth Day and here at Eden we’re taking the time to reflect upon it's significance - reminding us of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability🌍🌎🌏 This year, Earth Day’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics and calls upon all stakeholders, individuals, businesses and governments, to unite in combating plastic pollution and protecting our health - striving for a 60% Reduction of Plastic Production by 2040. We’re working with the #RefillCoalition to do just this. Alongside our partners GoUnpackaged, CHEP, Trade Fixtures, DIGI Europe Ltd, Berry Global, Inc. and Innovate UK, we’re working together on the introduction of refill stations in to Aldi UK. Looking to encourage customers to ‘swap to refill’ these stations reduce the use of plastic packaging and provide healthy food options simultaneously. If every household in the UK refilled just one item per week, we would eliminate over 1.4 billion items of single use plastic in a year...We’re proud to be pioneering the future of refill and reducing plastic packaging! Freebies and the connection to plastic waste Below is a picture of a set of ‘toys’ that a mid sized snack manufacturer has included in their product. This is by no means a unique activity as most ready made fast food snacks aimed at children have freebies added as part of the product. Two problems as I see with this: - this may be adding to the weight of the product reducing the weight of snack available for consumption. - these ‘toys’ are mostly single use, or not even that, and they are light and easily blown in the wind. This only adding plastic waste to communities least equipped to deal with it. This is because these are mostly cheaply priced products aimed at the corner store consumer. I believe a conversation is long overdue between teams in organisations serious about their EPR responsibilities about their freebie strategies in order to reduce their plastic waste footprint. As a consumer, making me feel guilty about wanting to, and having to disposing mindfully all the time, will only make me stop consuming the product. #marketing #salestransformation #esgstrategy #plasticpollution

This year we’ve been making a few changes when it comes to plastic packaging. We have: 🥛Swapped to glass bottled milk sourced from local farmers 🍊Avoided all plastic packaging on our fruit deliveries, also from local producers. These small changes allowed us to support local business and farmers, by removing a big step in the production change from farm to store, as well as minimising the amount of time travelled, as the milk and fruit is collected from a local farm.    It also allows us to minimise our plastic waste, as we return the pint glass bottle for the milk and cardboard crates for the fruit each week, when the new delivery is dropped off 🚚   In the world of marketing, the chains have the biggest voice within the space, and can often be the easy, default choice for customers, and businesses alike. So, it's particularly important to reach out to local, independent businesses, as it means we are supporting the local supplier chain too, resulting in a positive affect for local farmers and shops across the community. 'When you don't want plastic Wednesday.' Preparation and saying 'NO!' is the key to stopping the accumulation of unwanted plastic. Reusing egg cartons, brown paper bags, jars and cloth bags to shop at the market is just about thinking ahead. Dried fruit and grains can be weighed in jars, eggs put in reused cartons and fruit and vegetables in cloth bags. Easy peasy! Of course shopping at local street markets is not always possible for everyone but you can navigate away from plastic even in supermarkets. Adopt a 'green' mindset for #sustainability #reducingwaste and embracing #change. Happy Hump Day! 🌻

At the start of July, many Culligan employees took the Plastic Free July pledge, committing to avoid single-use plastic products for the entire month.   Despite the challenges, Culligan employees shared innovative ways to replace items such as plastic grocery bags & water bottles. The Town of Breckenridge is working towards getting rid of #singleuseplastics! Yesterday, a new ordinance took effect that bans plastic water bottles, containers and serviceware. "The plastic water bottle ban includes all businesses in Breckenridge, and the single-use container and service ware ban applies to retail food establishments." Brilliant brilliant news! Two things to consider in the context of food and drink businesses: - this could be a tricky one for smaller businesses to adapt to straight away. - in most circumstances, the replacement to these are still single-use waste So if you are heading to a weekend food festival, or Christmas market et al… don’t forget to pack your coffee cup, tumbler, reusable cutlery etc. That will sound like over kill to many, but to those of you who have a stock pile of plastic forks because you couldn’t face binning them, or kicked yourself as you were handed a polystyrene cup of mulled wine… then this is for you.
