A pressing concern in the Global South is the limited access to safe water and sanitation services. IHE Delft, alongside its partners UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) and VEI, organized a second training session in Kigali, Rwanda, following an initial course held in Nairobi in 2018. This gathering convened 42 coordinators from 28 water and sanitation service providers operating in low-income countries, aiming to reflect on their achievements and identify what further actions are necessary to enhance access to safe water and sanitation. One of the primary objectives of this course was to foster a network for exchanging ideas among these professionals. In Sub-Saharan Africa, only 31% of the population has access to safely managed water services. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6.1, which calls for universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water by 2030, an additional 69% of the population must gain access to safely managed water supplies. IHE Delft's Associate Professor of Urban Governance, Klaas Schwartz was part of the team that delivered the training. It will address the topic of real costs, long-term benefits, and feasibility of green roofs, emphasizing economic assessments and how some of the ecosystem services of green roofs can be expressed in monetary units. There will be an opportunity to learn from Czech and Portuguese case studies and discover why such evaluations are crucial for green roof implementation. (SIAM Syndicat Intercommunal d'Assainissement de Marne-la-Vallée) 🌍 Visit 1 Cluster Eau Milieux Sols Paris Ile-de-France (Cluster Eau Milieux Sols Paris Ile-de-France) and Sailing on the Seine! 🌱🌍 We are thrilled to share another Knowledge Piece, this time on the Do No Significant Harm #DNSH implementation in Cohesion Policy drafted by the esteemed Academic Sounding Board Member Prof. Dr. Eduardo Medeiros ! As a new principle, analysing and discussing DNSH implementation in urban and rural areas is challenging. Nonetheless, this Knowledge Piece shows how the DNSH principle in both urban and rural areas can be assessed more effectively and place-based. Key takeaways: 🔍 DNSH ensures that EU policies comply with the objective of not significantly harming the environment and climate. 🔍 Although it adds to the administrative workload, DNSH enhances policy monitoring and evaluation.  🔍 Varying DNHS evaluation methodologies exist across Member States, reflecting their unique capacities.  🔍 Simplifying DNSH with clear guidelines and unified evaluation is essential.  🔍 Implementing DNSH requires deep environmental and policy expertise.  🔍 Territorial Impact Assessment (TIA) can adapt DNSH evaluation for specific areas.
