May is small business month: Small businesses in the United States create 1.5 million jobs annually, and account for 99% of US businesses. According to National Today, “Small Business Month is a special celebration month created by the Small Business Administration (S.B.A.) to celebrate small businesses. S.B.A. is an organization that helps small business owners and entrepreneurs pursue the American dream. Small Business Week 2024: Policies Matter and Small Businesses are Not Getting What They Need This week (April 28-May 4) has been declared “National Small Business Week” by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The week acknowledges “the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners,” according to the SBA. SBE Council president & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued a statement noting the week: "We salute and celebrate the millions of entrepreneurs, small business owners and their employees who work hard every day to achieve their dreams...we look forward to working with our small business members, friends in Congress and in the business community to press forward on highlighting the sound policies that support small business growth and success. From our Administrator Isabel Casillas Guzman, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the voice in President Biden’s Cabinet for America’s more than 33 million small businesses: “More Americans than ever are pursuing their dreams of business ownership as the rate of new business applications filed and establishments under President Biden continues to surge,” said Administrator Guzman. “In the last year alone, Americans across the country and in a wide range of industries filed a record five and a half million new business applications, bringing the total number under this Administration to a record-breaking 16 million.
