The Phases of First-Year Teaching were identified by Ellen Moir, founder of New Teacher Center and FuelEd Advisory Board member. In October and through into December of their first year, many new teachers enter a phase known as disillusionment. The anticipation of starting a new teaching career and the battle to survive the first months in the classroom is now over. Disillusionment sets in with the realization of how difficult teaching and meeting the needs of all students can be. It is critical that districts assist new teachers and ease their transition from student teacher to full-time professional. Fortunately, the Phases of First Year Teaching provides a useful framework for the development of appropriate, timely support and resources for new teachers. This fall, we encourage you to tell your new teachers about these Phases. It lets them know they are not alone in their experience but on a journey.
