Embrace Electrification: Sailing Towards a Cleaner Future! When we talk about electric vehicles, it's often cars that come to mind. But let's not forget the crucial role of electrification in marine transport – a vital, yet often overlooked, aspect of our journey towards sustainability. From the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers to hybrid crew transfer vessels for offshore wind farms, success stories abound, showcasing significant emissions reductions driving further electrification efforts. There is a lot we can do already today, as I've outlined in this freshly released op-ed at Business Green. Looking a bit forward, we must act swiftly to future-proof the entire electric ecosystem. From expanding charging infrastructure to upgrading the electricity grid. It’s high time to view marine electrification as urgent for the sector itself and for the entire green transition of society. It’s time to embrace marine electrification. Did you know that local authorities impact more than 80% of carbon emissions in their area and 300 English councils have declared a climate emergency? ❌ Consequently, fleet electrification has become a priority on their agendas. VEV is an expert in designing and scaling electric fleet solutions, working closely with Tootbus and Serco. Mike Nakrani, CEO, spoke with Open Access Government about the ZEBRA bus electrification scheme, electrifying refuse collection vehicles and why moving towards fleet electrification will play a key role in reducing carbon emissions. Actively seeking Fall Co-op / Spring Full time opportunities | Master in Engineering Management at NC State University |
As a student, I'm truly inspired by Danfoss's commitment to addressing the environmental impact of the shipping industry and paving the way towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for marine transport. With the shipping industry emitting approximately 940 million tones of carbon dioxide annually, accounting for around 2.5% of global emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), initiatives like these are crucial for our planet's well-being. The electrification in marine transport comes at a pivotal time. By highlighting the successes of electrification and emphasizing its potential for emissions reductions, they're setting a powerful example for the industry. Strategic focus on countries with significant lithium reserves and production, such as Chile, Australia, and China, is particularly noteworthy. These regions hold almost 90% of the world's lithium-ion reserves and production, offering immense opportunities for innovation and collaboration.
