Thank you Johnny Rodgers for your leadership and advocacy in support of the work of the U.S. Census Bureau and thank you Director Santos (Santos, Rob) for your visit. The Bureau has robust and important databases that reflect the state of our communities, businesses, families, and economy. The data collected by the decennial census determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is also used to distribute hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities. Preparation for and participation in the census is essential. It helps the government decide how to distribute funds and assistance to states and localities. It is also used to draw the lines of legislative districts and reapportion the seats each State holds in Congress. Did you know that the Bureau offers a wide range of resources that can help you make informed decisions for your business or community? From the American Community Survey and Population Study to measures of unemployment and important employment opportunities, the Census Bureau has much to offer beyond what you might be aware. Small business owners and entrepreneurs can benefit greatly from the small business funds and entrepreneurial funds offered by the Bureau. Their Data Dissemination Specialists can also help get data into your hands, while the Census Business Builder can provide you with valuable insights for business planning. Additionally, the Census Community Resilience tool offers insights into community resilience, which can be extremely helpful for community development and planning. Texas may gain 4 U.S. House seats and electoral votes in the next census redistricting if population increase trends stay on track and the South may comprise 40% of the nation's population. https://lnkd.in/gWbjyb3C. It will be interesting to see how this develops and what impact it has.

Between 2021-2022, Florida's population grew by 2.1% – the greatest year-over-year percentage increase across the United States. Government Essentials now includes full coverage of American Community Survey (ACS) data. Unlike the Census released every 10 years, the ACS is published annually by the U.S. Census Bureau. The survey provides social, economic, housing, and demographic information for various geographic entity levels including city, zip code, and census block groups. Example topics covered: age, race, income, employment status, immigration status, monthly rent amount, mortgage status, educational attainment, commuting/journey to work, veteran status, and fertility We made the data easier to work with by releasing it on Snowflake Marketplace in a consistent form: https://lnkd.in/dge6E2wg

As we near the end of an exciting year, we're taking a moment to rewind and revisit our top 12 blog posts from 2023! Starting with #12, Going Beyond Census Data: Better Community Analysis For Public Libraries. Reviewing trends in demographic data reveals what local communities look like and how they are changing. State, District, and local libraries rely on data from the U.S. Census Bureau to inform decisions about the distribution of funds and assistance to the locations with the most need. Community stakeholders determine where to build new branches, host programs, and find their most vulnerable patrons based on census data.

From 2021 to 2022 Dallas County added 17,933 households but "only" 17,194 people. This is because household size is falling in the US, not just cities. For Dallas County it fell from 2.62 to 2.59 per household. Dallas County needed to add 11,294 housing units just to keep its population stable. In the end it added 17,933. It is always going to be easier to add housing units in greenfield suburbia, even if our central cities didn't generally make it illegal (as of right) to add housing in the central areas (but that is certainly not helping). These stories/points are largely true across all of our metros. #migration #urbanism #suburbanism

The Census is coming! The Census is Coming! You might think it is too early to be preparing for the 2030 Census but that's not true. I had the honor of welcoming the Census Collaborative Convening to Casey's offices this morning. It is an opportunity for the census community to learn and strategize together in preparation for 2030. We welcomed more than 100 attendees to the event plus many more online, including national, state and local funders, organizers, advocates, researchers and academics. U.S. Census Director Robert Santos also spoke. Among other things, this network developed the Count All Kids campaign (https://countallkids.org) to tackle the persistent undercount of young children in the Census. Even with the unprecedented effort from funders, the net undercount of young children in 2020 was 5.4% — the highest rate since 1950 when the Bureau first started collecting data for young children. We are determined to improve this. For philanthropy, accurate census data are vital to help us understand the issues we work on and the communities we serve, establish priorities, inform stronger evaluation, and monitor progress. Accurate census data are essential for the equitable allocation of more than $800 billion in annual federal assistance to states, communities, and families. The census also determines political representation at the federal, state and local levels. So we and others are preparing now to help ensure this critical foundation of democracy -- the way we allocate political representation, funding, and so many more resources -- is fair and accurate.
