"In 2021, the Queensland Government released its Protected Area Strategy 2020–2030, providing an overarching policy to effectively double the state’s protected areas. This was followed by one of the single largest budget allocations for the acquisition of land for new national parks—a commitment of AUD$301 million to expand protected areas on Cape York (AUD$38.5m) and the rest of Queensland (AUD$262.5m). A conservation easement is a legally binding agreement where-in a landowner donates certain development rights associated with the land to a land trust. The donated property’s use is permanently limited to protect its conservation attributes and values, however, we work carefully with each client to find a fit that allows certain reserved rights, (i.e. building a homesite, agricultural use, hunting), while also protects the biodiversity and ecological features of the site. NALT's conservation strategies include charitable conservation easements, mitigation conservation easements, municipal easements, and creating preserves through land donations and acquisition. (sharing from Cheetah Conservation Fund) Just a little more than a century ago, there were still nearly 100,000 cheetahs in the wild. The cats were found throughout most of Africa and into Asia, through the Arabian Peninsula to the Caspian region, and into India and Pakistan. But, over the last century, cheetahs have disappeared from most of their historical range. Today, the cats are found in only about 9% of their past distributional range - and there are less than 7,500 mature cheetahs remaining in the wild. In Asia, cheetahs disappeared from the wild almost entirely during the first half of the twentieth century. Asiatic cheetahs now persist only in Iran, and there are believed to be less than 40 individuals remaining. In Africa, cheetahs also occupy just a tiny portion of their historic range. Most of the continent’s remaining cheetahs are found in East Africa and within a swath of Southern Africa that extends into six countries – Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, and Zambia. While cheetahs are currently classified as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the Northeast African cheetah, a subspecies found in the Horn of Africa, was reclassified as Endangered last year. Two cheetah subspecies - the Asiatic cheetah and the Northwest African (or Saharan) cheetah - are both currently listed as Critically Endangered. Rewilding – a holistic approach towards regenerating nature As defined by Rewilding Britain, rewilding is the practice of restoring ecosystems on a large scale. It aims to reinstate natural processes and allow wildlife to shape landscapes. Rewilding is a crucial part of fighting the climate and biodiversity crises, mitigating extreme weather events and reconnecting with nature. While the impact of taking preventative action against macro issues such as climate change and plastic pollution can feel intangible, rewilding offers an “immediacy” of return, as explained by fund manager and environmentalist Ben Goldsmith, who is currently overseeing rewilding projects in both Norfolk and Lincolnshire, as confirmed in a recent article in the FT. Philanthropists across the world have ambitious and positive plans to regenerate and preserve neglected lands. The Global Rewilding Alliance now constitutes a network of over 150 conservation groups and the movement is attracting billionaire philanthropists who are buying land explicitly to return it to nature. The co-founder of The North Face and Esprit is an example; Douglas Tompkins amassed over 2 million acres of land between the early 1990s and his death in 2015. As an alternative to buying land for rewilding, large landowners can give over existing holdings to the rewilding cause. This has been seen from private estates in the UK, including the likes of Knepp in West Sussex, a 3,500-acre haven for endangered species including nightingales and turtle doves. 20 years ago, I had the idea to start a non-profit organization, even though I was a partner at Scheda Ecological Associates at the time. Up to that point in my career, 100% of all the habitat restoration/stormwater retrofit projects that I had the privilege to work on had 1 common element...they were all performed on public lands! Since only ~20% of the coastal areas in this region are publicly owned, even if all of these were restored to their full potential, we would not be able to "move the needle" on what needs to be done! So the idea to formulate Public/Private/Partnerships (P3s) was launched! Since then over 100 acres has been restored and protected via perpetual Conservation Easements, with just one such partnership. Ecosphere is currently working on two new alliances to implement Living Shorelines on private land to demonstrate that these are viable options. Did you know? It’s ground-nesting bird season! We’re asking visitors to stay out of cordoned off areas and keep dogs under control across @coleppingforest to help protect some of the UK’s rarest and most fascinating birds. You may have seen temporary rope cordons and information signs in sections of Wanstead Flats, a particular site where skylarks are known to make their nests between February and September. It’s important not to go into these areas, as dogs can scare adult birds from nests, leaving chicks vulnerable, or worse, accidental trampling can destroy these habitats in just one step. Wanstead Flats is also a Special Area of Conservation and forms part of Epping Forest – Essex’s and London’s largest green space – which is managed by the City of London Corporation as a registered charity. We protect around 11,000 acres of green space in London and south east England – including places like Hampstead Heath, Burnham Beeches and over 180 smaller sites within the Square Mile. ➡️ https://loom.ly/BRGoKQw
