Dear Recruiters, I wholeheartedly concur with the expressed in the statement. The roles of a Photographer, Videographer, Graphic Designer, Photo Editor, and Video Editor represent distinct and specialized fields, each demanding a unique set of skills (perhaps not only in the field of design, but in other fields as well there might be a combination of specializations due to company constraints, such as the formation of only three individuals for a team division or various other reasons related to budget considerations). It is imperative to acknowledge that possessing additional expertise in one of these areas should not automatically mandate the assumption of responsibilities in the others. Such supplementary skills often arise from a genuine passion for learning and curiosity rather than an obligation to perform additional roles (and some Indonesian companies that I have come across on LinkedIn or another job portal platform have requirements similar to this: combining all into one role). The fusion of these diverse roles into a single position not only jeopardises the quality of work but also underscores the need for equitable compensation reflective of the multifaceted nature of the position.

Hiring a talented photographer and/or videographer can be expensive 🤑 Our top tip to maximize each dollar in your content capture budget is to enlist the dream team and staff according to your needs. A few questions to ask when thinking about your staffing needs: ⏳ How long do I need coverage for?  📷 Will simultaneous events/sessions need to be captured at the same time? 🗒 Do I have any on-site client requests and/or photo/video needs? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you determine the number of photographers and videographers you need, as well as if you need any additional assistance from an on-site project manager or production assistant. 

“Can You Make the Lobster Less Sad?” When a retoucher and a client/colleague have a good relationship and trust each other, magic happens. Clients can give guidance like "Make the lobster less sad" and trust that the retoucher will figure out how to do that. The retoucher can flag a potential production nightmare and the client will listen and save themselves expense and trouble. As much as I like to get in the zone as a retoucher, ultimately my work is about what you want, and figuring out how to deliver it. I enjoy working in tandem, learning from others, and bringing a sense of curiosity to the process. It's about being adaptable and open-minded, and ready to work with a variety of creative styles. I have found that along with the technical skills, designers, photographers, project managers and creative directors appreciate a collaborative spirit, patience, and responsiveness to feedback without resistance. ColorNation Colorists Talk Color - Matthew Rosenblum Matthew Rosenblum is the latest ColorNation colorist to talk about what makes grading such a unique part of the post process. Based in New York, he’s been working in color for over two decades, with a client list that includes not just major agencies but also media brands like Comedy Central, MTV/VH1, Paramount and more. He got his start at the legendary color studio Nice Shoes, working alongside his twin brother, who was on the VFX side of the business. They’ve collaborated frequently, often on their own lifestyle and cityscape photography studio that licenses imagery to Art.com, Walmart, Print on Demand and other e-stores. An early adoptee of the independent approach to color grading, Matthew believes every session, and every client, should get the same level of attention, nuance and detail. “And I’m always looking to enhance the craft of color, which I’ve poured so much of myself into,” he says. My most notable job this past year has not been just one job, but rather it’s been working on all of the extra content for the Taylor Sheridan shows on Paramount. All of the content is always so well thought out, and it's produced at the highest level. It’s been a lot of fun to work on. So what does being repped by someone with a long history in color like ColorNation’s Reid Brody mean for you? Having someone try to steer work in your direction who’s not versed in the specifics of color correction can sometimes create issues and problems right from the start, whereas working with someone with such strong roots and experience in color as Reid has is like having a secret weapon in your back pocket. Having him in the mix is really a big asset. What drew you to color grading in the first place? When I came into the business, grading was not something you’d really know about, unless you were at NYU or USC’s film schools. So I had no real knowledge of this integral part of the post production puzzle until starting at Nice Shoes. Once I got into the room and saw what it was all about, the thing that attracted me was that the possibilities were endless. Having that sort of flexibility to make things look so many different ways was, and still is, my favorite part of the process. What have you seen recently that blew you away from a color standpoint? Apple TV’s “Masters of Air” is such a treat to watch in this regard. The production value for the entire series is through the roof, and that definitely lent itself to making this period piece look the part. Sometimes to stick out in the competitive landscape, you have to pitch concepts that no one else is doing. Make stuff that really stands out compared to the norm. Among 5 other (arguably better or more daring concepts) the client, Junk King, chose to pursue this one we call “Annoying Junk”. The idea is that everyone has some junk around their house or their workplace that is just a little bothersome. We wanted to play up that idea with the office supplies taking it up to the next level and being flat-out annoying by making loud and childish noises, coughing, and telling lame dad jokes. To execute this idea, we used a combination of real voices for the audio to pair up with the 3D eyes and 2D animated mouth to create a unique, fun look that would bring each object to life. Taking inspiration from the mundane, dreary atmosphere of the movie Office Space, we chose to light and color our footage to evoke that same dismal vibe. In the end, we ended up with something that stood out in comparison to the cookie-cutter videos in the industry and delivered the value proposition in a fun and simple way.
