The idea of #socialtippingpoints is attractive to many that want a (sustainability) #transition: you don't have to convince everyone to let, from then on, societal norms (peer effects) do the rest. A recent study ( 👉 https://lnkd.in/dH6nAE9X? dgcid=rss_sd_all#fig0005) conducted in Shanghai delved into how social influences, particularly peer effects, can catalyze these critical transitions. 🔍 Peer Influence on EV Adoption: The research highlighted that the perceived social tipping point for EV adoption in Shanghai occurs when 31-40% of individuals in a peer network adopt EVs. This peer influence is significant because it facilitates knowledge sharing and enforces social norms that encourage more people to make similar sustainable choices. 🔄 Mechanics Behind Peer Effects: ◼ Learning from Peers: Individuals often adopt new technologies like EVs after observing and learning from their peers, reducing uncertainty about such advancements. ◼ Conformity to Social Norms: The adoption of EVs also increases as individuals align themselves with the evolving social norms within their networks, which value sustainability. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭? Before reaching the tipping point, peer effects, can also help. There is evidence that climate action can lead to tipping points ( 👉 https://lnkd.in/dEGZs4S4), but it is not sufficient to trigger widespread adoption. Other factors such as technology, infrastructure, and supportive policies play pivotal roles. Once the tipping point is crossed, peer influences significantly amplify the adoption rates, driving a self-sustaining loop of acceptance and further adoption. 𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝? Of course, there is not one answer. Let's: we need substantially less than half of the population to convince everyone. Organisational transformation and change management is so much more strategic and profound than simple linear project change which feels a bit like the dated first change management rendition of the past. Project change is important, but is a stepping stone when considering change strategy of one organisation of one or many in this interconnected world we live in. This is not a theoretical exercise either. How many of us have experience, even lead a merger of two organisations? Implemented ESG up and down supply chains or instigated a SIAM transformation? We no longer live in a world that understands siloed organisations, furthermore we need to accept that we are so interconnected globally that supply chains don't go far enough to describe the true scope of our formal and informal networks.
