It has been said that "Texas is like a whole other country," and in so many ways, it really is. We are the "Lone Star State," our motto is "friendship" and our state song is, "Texas Our Texas." There are 268,820 square miles of land here, ranging in elevation from sea level to 8,752 feet atop Guadalupe Peak in Culberson County (west)Texas. That's 172,044,800 acres, given a square mile = 640 acres (a section of land). But 2.5% of the land is underwater, so 167,743,680 total land area. Texas became a state in 1845, the 28th to be admitted to the Union. From 1836 to 1845, we were known as the Republic of Texas. In 1845, the Republic of Texas stretched from Port Isabel on the Gulf Coast, north past the Medicine Bow Mountain Range in what is now southern Wyoming. There are two time zones here, Central and Mountain.
We border New Mexico to our west, Oklahoma to our north, Arkansas to our northeast, Louisiana to our east, the Gulf of Mexico to our southeast, and Mexico to our south and southwest. It is 773 miles from east to west and 790 miles from north to south.
Texas is noted for bluebonnets, rodeo, mockingbirds, armadillos, longhorn (as well as many other varieties) cattle, purple sage, roses, The Alamo, pecan pie, the horned lizard, jalapeno peppers, bobwhite quail, whitetail deer, quarter horses, cutting horses, Friday night football, bird dogs, oil and gas, tornados, floods and droughts and perhaps most notable of all, some of the most friendly people in the world.
