It feels like we are witnessing an important movement in the biomedical/health sciences: the "flippening" of post-Ph.D. career choices. When I entered biotech directly after graduating in 2018, my career choice was less conventional. I was lucky to have friends and peers whom I looked up to, who had entered industry before me, which made it feel less scary. Nonetheless, senior faculty were skeptical. Now, more Ph.D. graduates are entering industry (up almost 40% in past 20 years) than postdocs (down 15% in past 20 years; data from NSF). The biotech/pharma R+D environment is harder in 2023/2024 than it was in 2020-2022, so TBD on how this data pans out beyond 2022, but the signs are clear. Let's weigh the pros and cons for both sides: Staying as a Scientist: Pros: Continuing in academia provides the opportunity for a deep dive into research, offering autonomy in experiment design, networking opportunities with researchers globally, and the potential to contribute to groundbreaking discoveries, thus shaping the future of Genomics & Proteomics. Cons: Staying in academia may entail facing a limited career path due to the highly competitive nature of academic positions, scarcity of tenure-track roles, funding challenges, and potential financial instability, along with the risk of a narrow skillset development focused solely on research. You're a scientist finishing grad school and you want a job in biotech. When should you apply? Do you need to do a postdoc? What about industry postdocs? Here are my answers to these 3 common questions: 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟭 How long before graduation should I start applying to jobs in biotech? 𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝟭   Start applying 4-6 months before graduation. It can take 1-2 months to get into the groove of applications and to get the traction you need for your first interview. Once you get your interview it can take anywhere from 1-3 months for the hiring process to finish (depends on size of company). Note: small startups tend to want you to start working right away. Large pharma companies tend to be more willing to wait 4-6 weeks. 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟮 Do I need to have postdoc experience? Does it help me? 𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝟮 It depends on your skills. If you meet all of the skills in a high demand field, you don’t need to do postdoc (ie coding + lab, gene editing crispr/cas9, CAR-T, bioinformatics). If you want to go to industry the purpose of a postdoc is to upskill. 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝟯 How does industry view academic postdocs vs industry postdocs? 𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝟯 Industry postdocs are the best choice for individuals who want to pursue the postdoctoral path. You'll get to upskill, while gaining experience that is considered "industry experience". Just make sure you do your postdoc at a big name, reputable pharmaceutical company (ie BMS, Merck, J&J, Genentech, Lilly) 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆?  🚀 Navigating the Translational Scientist Career Journey 🌍    When completing my PhD, I found myself at a crossroads, uncertain of my next steps. However, I was drawn to the fascinating world of translating scientific breakthroughs from the lab bench into practical treatments and diagnostics but wasn’t sure how to get into this area and back then, opportunities felt limited.  But times have changed! The innovation and commercialisation landscape in Aotearoa has taken off. Now, the science system eagerly awaits more expert scientists who can straddle the line between academia and industry/business.  For budding young scientists looking to dive into the realm of translational science, here are some tips from my own journey: 1️⃣ Connect: reach out to as many professionals in this space as you can —scientists, university commercialisation managers and venture capital partners or analysts. Networking is your ticket to exciting opportunities and events that may otherwise pass you by.  2️⃣ Follow different groups such as KiwiNet, Callaghan Innovation, Massey Ventures and Chiasma to gain insight into how the innovation ecosystem pieces together – there are many, many more players but these will get you started  3️⃣ Attend events and courses: enrich your knowledge by participating in events and seminars about intellectual property and technology transfer. It's a crucial part of the translational process that you won't get much experience with inside most academic labs.  4️⃣ Find a mentor: number one tip for any scientist planning their career! Biotech has always been looked upon as a niche. But if you can carefully look at the trends and stats, Biotech is going to be the prime field that would attract huge job opportunities. The pivotal point is when Biotech became a product industry which is driven by datas, technology, people & marketing. Research and lab skills will still exist but might not contribute to more than 10-20% of the Biotech workforce. The new Biotech industry requires a whole new level of skillsets that will cater to 80% of the jobs.
