Helping patients to create and make evidence-informed healthcare choices through involvement and engagement in HTA and research NIHR | NICE | NHS E | THIS Institute | Genetics Alliance UK
Care and its value are invisible in plain sight. Driving carers to the edge of burnout and beyond is not a sustainable strategy. "[One] in three adults (30%) in Scotland have caring responsibilities; with respondents saying they are a parent (15%) or look after a child informally (7%), are an unpaid carer for someone who is ill, disabled or elderly (7%), or are employed in a paid caring role (2%). While caring is widespread, the data shows that nearly three quarters (74%) of adults in Scotland believe care work is not valued highly enough by the Scottish Government.…[The] majority of people don’t think that the increased attention on the role of carers during the pandemic resulted in any additional practical support for paid carers (57%), unpaid carers (61%) or parents (55%)."

Question of the week: Are there any government programs or financial assistance options available for in-home caregiving services in Pennsylvania for eligible individuals? Yes, Medicaid does offer these services for all individuals who financially qualify. Additionally, there are other state programs offered through Medicaid. for some individuals who wouldn't normally qualify, such as VA and the Holocaust programs that can pay for services. Join me in celebrating Universal Health Coverage Day 2023. Since 2012, #UHCDay has been a global bridge across health sector silos. This year, we’re coming together to call for strong, equitable health systems that leave no one behind – including those living with #NoncommunicableDiseases. Geography can’t dictate access to quality care if we expect to achieve #HealthForAll. That’s why The Helmsley Charitable Trust's Type 1 Diabetes program partners are focused on improving health access for everyone, including people living with #T1D in low and middle-income countries. From increasing the number of registered insulins to promoting smart models of integrated care, we’re ensuring UHC covers the global NCD community in policy and in practice ☂ There is room for improving the private sector’s role in this endeavor. Together with civil society, governments, and philanthropies, we can shape health markets so everyone, everywhere has access to affordable care. Mark your calendar for an event that goes beyond awareness– a commitment to care. Join us on Saturday, December 9th, from 10am-12pm at our Sister Innocent Conference Center or virtually via Teams, for an empowering education series. In this session, we'll unravel the complexities of domestic violence– learning to recognize not just the physical and behavioral signs but gaining insights into the abuser's need for power and control. At Holy Cross Health, we're dedicated to protecting a caring for our patients. This commitment is why discussions on topics like domestic violence are not just essential but imperative. We believe that understanding and action go hand in hand. Together, lets create a safer and more informed environment. #HolyCross #HolyCrossHealth #TrinityHealth #Hospital #HealthCare #HealthCareAdvocacy #NonProfit #PublicHealth #CommunityHealth #CommunityEngagement #PatientCare #Medical #Medicine #Dometicviolence #Domestiveviolenceawareness #BreaktheSilence #HealthandWellness #Seminar

This one weakens me. About a whole 90M people are being pushed into extreme poverty just because they paid for healthcare out-of-pocket. Do you remember that family that went bankrupt when the mom had an accident? And that guy his friends and families were fundraising for his surgery? Let's not start with babies with medical conditions their parents just can't afford. My point is that these aren't just figures. They are real people finding it so difficult to navigate life just because they do not have financial protection to access healthcare services. Healthcare equity is long overdue, and now is the time to take action fast and together! Rural, underserved, marginalized, and neglected populations have long suffered in silence, join us to give them a chance at quality healthcare! For profit hospices-which now make up 70% of all US hospices, frighten me. Families are at their most vulnerable when a loved one is actively dying or near death. It is hard to make critically important care decisions when someone you love is in pain or in extremis. When I began my professional and personal journey with #hospice 4 decades ago, it was a concept, an alternative to dying in the hospital where the tendency is to keep treating someone even when the treatments themselves are futile and do not extend life in any meaningful way. Now, hospice is a profit center. IMHO, this is perverse. “For-profit hospices do a significantly worse job of providing this care than nonprofit agencies do, according to a study by the RAND Corporation. Looking at quality measures such as management of pain and other symptoms, communication with the hospice team, and timeliness of care, the researchers found that nonprofits outperformed for-profits in every category.” Here is another post in which I write about my reservations concerning for profit hospice care. https://lnkd.in/gS6rTgcw My mother, father and brother all received hospice care at the end of their lives. I made sure the hospices where not for profit, community based organizations. https://lnkd.in/epnMpHyH I recommend to you where it is possible for you to do so, that you do the same. #endoflife #eol #bearingwitness #hospices #hospicecare #deathanddying #endoflife #firstdonoharm #endoflifecare #primumnonnocere

As the attorney general of Minnesota so nicely put it in this article, "There is growing consensus that there is very little difference between a for-profit and nonprofit hospital when it comes to behavior." Even though non-profits receive tax exemptions ostensibly to pursue policies that serve the public interest. But financialization has come to medicine, witness Stanford Hospitals & Clinics which acts like a private equity firm pretending to be a nonprofit hospital. In this particular case, the nonprofit system changed is policy of refusing care to people with unpaid medical bills under threat from the state and with its tax breaks at risk. More states, and the Federal government, need to question the nonprofit status of health systems that charge too much, provide too little charity care, and who act solely to maximize patient revenue with little concern for patient well-being. #hospital #hospitalindustry #nonprofits #healthcare
