I woke up this morning reflecting on a great week of collaboration at La-Z-Boy Incorporated. Our cross-functional team working on High Point furniture market activations met this week and accomplished so much. Together, we tackled challenges, communicated openly, and solved problems. An obscure lyrical reference I know but as a marketer, it always makes me smile, as there is a hint of the truth in it. Most things that we are engaging with are trying to shape our perceptions of a product, service, person or place for a reason. I really enjoyed talking about the importance of perceptions and brand in place marketing at the Celebrate Chesterfield event. Perceptions are so important to attracting visitors, attracting investment and attracting people to an area to live, study and work. Perceptions are of course owned by each and everyone of us, and whether they are based in fact or not they are our own reality. We see and hear this a lot around places, both positive and negative! (but that is a whole different post of its own). To influence perceptions we must consistently tell our place story. It has to be distinctive and rooted in the place. It also has to be authentic and relate to our target markets. As these posts go on throughout the year, you will notice that #coffee is a common thread between many of them, and in 2023, this week’s person was recognized by the National Automatic Merchandising Association as a true Coffee Legend. It makes so much sense to shout out Karalynn McDermott this week, because without her influence on my career, so much of this week probably never would have happened. Just yesterday, New Stand signed on to be featured in Imagination Way at this year’s #NAMA Show - an area dedicated to what’s next in the convenience services industry. But if not Karalynn (who was my main contact from BUNN Coffee at the time) pushing me to be more involved with NAMA as an organization starting in 2016, I would have never seen its true value. I honestly don’t remember the everyone on the first panel on which Karalynn gave me a seat (and a voice), but I remember the packed room, and the way it felt to feel talking about my thoughts and experiences added value for others. From that point on, Karalynn continued to push me to take part in things like two executive summits, an immersive Executive Development Program at Michigan State and more speaking opportunities at NAMA Shows - all of which led to my strongest relationships in the office refreshment world. In 2022, when I joined New Stand, my path with Karalynn once again crossed as she had moved on from BUNN and settled in with Eversys SA, whose Cameo system just so happened to be the company’s office coffee machine of choice. Through the use of Eversys equipment, we’ve been able to create a unique workplace coffee offering with La Colombe and coffee and Karalynn continued to be the threads that helped connect. So at the 2024 NAMA Show, when I trade in my attendee badge for one that says exhibitor, and launch a solution that will help operators everywhere level up their business, I can’t help but think that without Karalynn’s influence, this story would be very different.
