Hello to all my connections! I’m excited to share my very first LinkedIn post about my summer internship at MY.Alpha Management (though I must admit, I was so busy working hard that I had no time for selfies! Haha! :D) These past two months have been a fantastic opportunity to peek into the world of a full-time hedge fund analyst. I could probably fill five binders with all my takeaways, but let me highlight a few. I was honored to join MY.Alpha Management as a summer analyst, diving deep into stock research, particularly focusing on KOSPI-listed companies. This experience has broadened my perspective and sharpened my technical skills in equity investments—from fundamental analysis to governance, which is especially crucial when dealing with Korean conglomerates (the famous Chaebol). I also gained valuable macroeconomic insights this summer! I had the privilege of engaging in enlightening discussions with talented investors and IR professionals from various companies about the financial markets and industries in Korea, Mainland China, and Japan. Most importantly, I was inspired by the passion of the investors around me; they truly loved what they were doing, viewing it as more than just “work.” The market operates 365 days a year, which means if you don’t keep your eye on the ball, you might lose your pace. However, you can only maintain this focus if you genuinely “love” what you do. This reflection has led me to the conclusion that I absolutely love this field (even if I’m just a first-time full-time intern, haha)! This opportunity has also highlighted my own areas for growth. Investing requires a blend of technical analysis skills and a thorough understanding of factors like politics, macroeconomics, and social dynamics that can affect the companies we’re interested in. While I’ve learned so much, I’ve also discovered many areas for improvement (and yes, lifelong learning is essential!). I’ve made my share of mistakes along the way, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who provided me the chance to learn from them. Hedge Fund Interns: How to convert your internship into a full-time offer in 3 easy steps 1. Remember the other interns are COLLEAGUES not COMPETITION. I've seen interns approach this the wrong way and it's ugly. Offer to help them. Don't talk about them behind their back. Encourage them. 2. Make sure you thoroughly understand the job function and business purpose behind each role you support. Completely understanding them will not only allow you to do your job in the best manner possible, but it will allow you creative freedom to improve on the existing solutions. 3. Befriend everyone. Have a quick conversation. Ask them out for coffee. I've seen interns fail to get return offers because they didn't "demonstrate enough interest in the team".
