The Elephant in the Room: Rethinking Web3 Gaming Web3 gaming has been one of the most active and sought-after verticals in blockchain, paving the pathway to blockchain adoption and user onboarding ever since its inception. GameFi still has the highest number of wallet activities than any other vertical and has allowed the innovation and need for higher TPS, lower gas fees (L3 chains), account abstraction, and other Mumbo Jumbos. Yet, the core engine propelling GameFi forward — the "play-to-earn" model, coupled with the allure of digital asset ownership and the tantalizing promise of wealth — has inadvertently fostered a certain stagnancy in game development and public perception. Drawing from over fifteen years of diverse gaming experiences, from classics like Road Rash and Age of Empires to modern hits like Valorant and Cyberpunk, my gaming journey was never fueled by financial incentives. It was the sheer joy of overcoming challenges, the resilience built in the face of adversity, and the invaluable connections forged with fellow gamers that rendered my experiences truly rewarding. In my recent year working with gaming projects, I've delved deep into the potential of Web3 games to bridge the gaps left by their Web2 predecessors. The question remains: Will Web3 games transcend the current "token-centric" development model to offer a more enriching experience, or will they continue down a path that risks diluting the gaming essence with excessive monetization? The turning point in my reflections came upon encountering Shiti Rastogi Manghani's insightful piece, "Forget NFTs. Let’s go back to basics and make Web3 games fun first." This resonated deeply with my perspective. When we observe the massive engagement with Web2 games — marked by millions of downloads and daily active users who invest not only their time but also their finances, with no expectation of monetary return — it prompts a reevaluation of our priorities in game development. Perhaps it's time for the Web3 gaming sector to pivot, focusing less on financial incentives and more on fulfilling the intrinsic human needs for connection, achievement, and enjoyment. In doing so, we might rediscover the fundamental joys of gaming, paving the way for a future where fun and innovation coalesce, unhindered by the overshadowing prospect of profit.
