🌞 Bom dia, friends & colleagues – Today we start to announce the sessions of the upcoming Summit. All in all, we're looking at 13 hours of content with a bit of over 50 speakers. We had to control ourselves so that we don't expand the agenda to the degree where it would cut into the time that we all need for the informal discussions – don't worry, each day there's still 90 minutes set aside for breakfast, 90 minutes booked for lunch, and 3 hours reserved for dinner. Please meet the first panel from the Legal Radar segment: 🎙 Staying Compliant in Mexico & South America XC 2024 🎙 Lead and moderated by 🇧🇷 Vanessa Pareja Lerner (Dias Carneiro Advogados), the panel is for studios that look at scaling up their business in Mexico and South America: what are the top priorities in compliance in the region, based on the recent industry practice? Joining Vanessa are: 🇲🇽 Efraín Olmedo Velázquez (Santamarina y Steta, S. C.); 🇨🇴 Jorge Andres Bedoya Carmona (IE Law Group / B&V); and 🇨🇱 José Manuel Muñiz Herrera (ALMMA Asesorías Legales Muñiz & Asociados). Collectively, Mexico & South America is already a huge games market (Steam users in the region exceed those from Germany, Spain, France and Italy, while Brazil is often the no.1 market by installs for many of the mobile studios). Moreover, the population dynamics of the region – on stark contrast with that of Asia and Europe – makes it into even more important market in the near future. The challenge of operating in the region lies in staying compliant by prioritizing the specific issues that are important for each jurisdiction, based on the practical experience (there's multiple rules, but not every rule is enforced). While the region is not as harmonized as the EU, its shared history provides a lot of common ground between the different countries. This panel will provide a structured, practical, comparative overview of the regional legislation that’s relevant to the games industry, highlighting all the major issues that studios and their law firms should pay attention to. The panel will for 45 minutes in the afternoon of September 5. Até breve! #gamesindustry #videogames #southamerica #latam #videojogos

🫖 Good afternoon to all of you who are still checking emails, maybe because your holidays are over – or because they are yet to begin – or because you are based in America or in China, where going on holidays doesn't stop you from responding to emails (we salute you!). Today we're happy to announce one of the 4 headliner panels of the conference: 🎙️ COMPLIANT ENGAGEMENT OF MINORS XC 2024 🎙️ This ever-green topic has been on the agenda for a number of years by now, as its relevance continued to increase: every major region is currently busy implementing a stricter form of protection of minors, both through the updated regulation and through its enforcement. Given how central the issue is to the revenue, and how high are the risks of non-compliance, we want to anticipate the changes – then work with our colleagues in dev and ops to implement proper protocols as early in the production pipeline as we can (for prevention is better than cure, every time). 🇮🇪 Anna Morgan (Bird & Bird) will lead and moderate this cross-country panel, looking at the key issues that games studios focus on right now, and at where the regulation is moving globally. Joining Anna is the stellar team of experts: 🇧🇪 Dr. Anselm Rodenhausen (Video Games Europe); 🇬🇧 Nic Murfett (Take-Two Interactive); 🇺🇸 Shanna Pearce (Epic Games); 🇸🇬 Timothy M. (k-ID); and 🇺🇸 Amy Lawrence (SuperAwesome). We aim to provide visibility into the regulation & anticipated changes, discuss the approaches taken by some of the global studios, review the currently available tools & systems, and finally look at the best practices of collaborating with dev/biz teams on becoming compliant by design. The session is scheduled to run just before lunch on September 5, and will last up to 75 minutes – including the time set aside for contributions from the floor. #gamesindustry #videogames #protectionofminors

📣 THE ANNOUNCEMENT I'VE WAITED YEARS TO MAKE! 📣 ✊ At 20 years old, I said I wanted to build a nightlife movement for the games industry. 💹 What started as a small 120-person meetup called Manchester Gamers Unite in a small bar in Manchester's iconic Northern Quarter has now grown into a beast I never foresaw, FORMAT, which is now Europe's leading gaming nightlife event, and a nightlife movement for the whole games industry. 💪 Starting life as a university summer break hobby, FORMATGG has transformed into a multiday event and platform for leading games industry brands, studios, community leaders, businesses, and the gaming community across the world to connect with each other through the power of traditional nightlife culture and community-driven development. 🤝 We've worked with some of the biggest players and brands in the game across our seven-year journey since 2016 for both our events, and creative agency work. 🔶 Since then, I've had two missions: to give the games industry the nightlife movement it deserves and to grow the UK's profile as an events hub for the whole games industry, especially in the north. 👊 The Northern creative sector is disgustingly overlooked, and yet we produce some of the greatest creative projects, talent, and initiatives across the world in games, TV, film, music, and more, and I've made it a goal to provide the northern UK games industry with the event it deserves. 🌍At 26, our team has accomplished my original dream of building a nightlife movement for the games industry, to the point where now we have people travel from all over the UK, Europe, US, Asia, India, and many more countries to just participate in our events. 🗺 At 28, my new dream has been to see FORMAT expand into a multiregional event, enabling us to spread the mission and opportunities we have created to other underrepresented game industry hubs across the United Kingdom. 🔭 In 2020, we identified another great creative UK city that like Manchester (the best city ever, btw), has a wonderful games industry community and, again, like Manchester, has been criminally overlooked. 🗣 After over a year of speaking with various industry leaders from this wonderful city, many of whom have pledged support to help bring our event to the region, FORMAT will expand its borders to give this amazing city the games industry event it deserves. 🧡 I'm beyond proud of all the hard work the FORMAT team has done across 2023 to take Europe's leading games industry nightlife movement to a whole new level and work towards making our business go multiregional. I've waited years to say these words. Welcome to FORMAT Liverpool. See you in 2024! 🐝🐦 FORMAT LIVERPOOL /// UNDER CONSTRUCTION. 🎥 James Lobley 🎛 Six Degrees Music & Sound #videogameindustry #gaming #videogames #Manchester #Liverpool #events #gamingcommunity #gamesindustry

Chief Executive of Ukie, the trade body for the UK video game and interactive entertainment industry.
As my first full day at #Gamescom draws to a close, I thought it might be useful to post first impressions, and perhaps some insights from the next few days at Europe's largest trade & consumer video games event. I'll start with the sense of community - from the minute I stepped onto the platform at Bruxelles Midi I've been surrounded by games people. An ad-hoc group formed on the platform which carried on into my carriage, with devs from three different countries sat around a table talking about the finer points of some mechanic they were working on. Here in Cologne, the theme continues. I've been to meeting rooms, bars, a waterfront hotel, an event space and a rooftop party today and everywhere you look are the tell-tale company t-shirts, backpacks and lo-tops of the video game community at play. I've loved seeing the packs of 6-7 devs moving as one, t-shirts proudly bearing the graphics of the title they're working on, while industry veterans cut deals and share war-stories over drinks and schnitzel. The themes so far? I've spoken to people from across the video game ecosystem and some common concerns keep coming up. The 'phoenix generation' of new businesses emerging warily from layoffs only to find that challenging interest rates have cooled investor appetites. The challenges of making sure your game finds a player, the rising costs of player acquisition and the problem of platforms restricting access to much-needed data on how the players are playing your game. But alongside the challenges, some interesting positives too. The wave of innovation coming through in the indie community, the potential for #AI to help address complex challenges like restricting toxic behaviours (one particularly interesting discussion about an AI that can differentiate mates slating each other from real hate speech and harms). The trade fair itself doesn't fully get underway until tomorrow. I had an early view of some of the main halls - Kolnmesse is *huge* (as many had warned it would be!) and each of the hangar-sized spaces is filled with stunning displays, new games, merch, esports set-ups and so much more. The crowning glory, obviously, is the UK industry stand, run by Ukie. It is interesting that despite the fact that the other national stands are so obviously funded by their Government (the UK stand is industry-led and funded) the UK stand is the biggest and most impactful, focused as it is on creating a space for brilliant UK businesses to meet key contacts including potential publishers and funders. I can't wait for tomorrow - highlights include a 'political opening' reception with German state officials, meetings with investors from the Middle East and Asia, a Scottish Games Community drinks/meet-up and an industry BBQ. Like for more updates (or tell me to do one if this is creating massive FOMO). That's all for now!
