It was truly an honor to return to Davos last week for the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting. In sharing the stage, table, and room alongside some of the most influential thought leaders and changemakers, I imparted my wisdom and learned about some of the innovative and transformative initiatives taking place around the world. While we continue to navigate unprecedented global challenges – many which seemingly have no end in sight – I have returned home optimistic that positive change is underway. The next generation of leaders are leading the charge for clean energy transition and advocating for women’s full participation in society. Companies are doubling down on their DEI commitments, recognizing that performance and diversity are not mutually exclusive. Social entrepreneurs are exploring the myriad ways we can use AI to make life easier and better for all of us. Now that the conversations have taken place, it’s time to act. We need to transition from good intentions to intentional actions. Our collective goal should be to shape a future where the economy and society works for the benefit of all. #WEF24

A belated welcome to 2024! Gillian Tett, often a voice of common sense and reason in the FT, has today shared compelling reasons for optimism this year. It’s a refreshing read contrasting the less pleasant rolling news. Her insights on a series of advancements in tech and science, particularly in renewable energy, life sciences and AI, are inspiring. Working on so many assignments in similar fields it’s encouraging to see healthcare and digital growth is transforming lives for real, especially in emerging economies. And the evolving conversations on AI regulations are setting a potentially critical foundation. We're also seeing the global economy display commendable resilience, despite all the headwinds, with promising growth forecasts from the IMF of 2.9%. Ahead of the World Economic Forum Gillian Tett sets out 10 positive possibilities and suggests that current global challenges might not be as lasting as they seem. Happy New Year and Expectations in our minds: As we bid farewell to 2023, a year marked by unforeseen challenges and profound transformations, it's essential to reflect on the struggles that shaped us and the invaluable lessons learned. On a geopolitical scale, 2023 witnessed shifts in power dynamics and diplomatic landscapes. Nigeria grappled with complex issues, prompting a reevaluation of global alliances and priorities. The interconnectedness of our world has become increasingly evident, emphasizing the need for collaborative solutions to address pressing challenges such as political changes and economic disparities and how it affects us as a nation. From a technological standpoint, innovations accelerated at an unprecedented pace, transforming the way we work, connect, and live. However, this rapid progress also sparked conversations around ethical considerations, privacy concerns, and the need for responsible technological development. As we set our sights on 2024, there is a prevailing sense of hope and anticipation. The lessons of 2023 have fortified us, expectations for the new year revolve around harnessing the newfound wisdom to foster positive change. In 2024, we anticipate continued advancements in technology, but with a heightened emphasis on ethical frameworks and responsible and sellable innovations. The world's gaze remains fixed on addressing pressing environmental issues, with renewed commitments to sustainable practices, also, more attention on the importance of collective action in overcoming shared challenges, from public health crises to economic inequalities. Ultimately, the struggles of 2023 have sculpted a world that is more resilient, interconnected, and attuned to the needs of its inhabitants and challenges. So what exactly is World Economic Forum??? 🌎📈💰 🏠 I am sure a lot of you guys must have this question in your mind especially because the 54th Annual Meeting of the WEF just ended. The 54th Annual Meeting of The World Economic Forum took place at Davos-Klosters from 15th to 19th January 2024. Davos, Switzerland, hosts the annual World Economic Forum (WEF), founded in 1971. The WEF is a non-profit organization fostering collaboration between public and private sectors. Its January 2024 meeting aims to rebuild trust amidst global transformation, focusing on stakeholder capitalism. Union ministers like Smriti Irani and CMs from states like Maharashtra attend to promote India's growth. The Maharashtra government anticipates securing around 3.5 lakh crores in MOUs at Davos. With over 2,500 delegates, including government reps, international organizations, and media. The meetings here facilitate connections among global decision-makers from governments, corporations, or NGOs. One thing to note is that the average Joe can't attend this event, attendance to WEF is by invitation only. This invite-only status is one of the main things that has helped keep the lustre of the WEF intact even after so many years. Davos emphasizes fair practices, guided by the Davos Manifesto. The 2024 agenda centers on rebuilding trust in the future, within societies, and among nations. Collaborations with partners like McKinsey address challenges such as global interdependencies, economic stability, AI's role, and climate strategies. The themes from 2023 included resilience, globalization, sustainability, community parity, and the future space economy. Davos acts as a platform for global change, vital amid the COVID-19 disruptions, fostering hope through diverse interactions and collaborations. The impact extends beyond formal sessions, highlighting the importance of human interaction in shaping a better future. Last week, I was in Davos, Switzerland, presenting at a precursor event before the World Economic Forum (WEF). It got me thinking! With its Bond movie-like name, you might picture a secret society of supervillains plotting world domination. But let's demystify this event: it's more about handshakes than world-shaking plans. The WEF isn't a global puppet master. It's an international NGO, not as powerful as the IMF or World Bank. It's a magnet for influential economists, policymakers, business executives, celebrities, and politicians for one reason: 𝗡𝗘𝗧𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚! Think of the WEF as an intellectual mixer, where world leaders and industry captains exchange business cards and ideas, possibly over expensive coffee and Koi Carp views. "The Great Reset," a WEF term for post-pandemic recovery, sounds ominous, fueling conspiracy theories about lizard people and secret governments. However, Davos is about sustainable capitalism and environmentalism discussions - often by people who flew in on private jets. We could criticise the hypocrisy around carbon footprint for sure! Companies pay huge fees to be part of the WEF. The real value lies in unofficial meetings, where deals are struck and partnerships formed, away from the public eye. The WEF is like an exclusive club - a 'Davos family', as founder Klaus Schwab calls it. The same faces, the same ideas, and a hefty entry fee don't suggest 'diversity of thought', but it's not a supervillain gathering. In conclusion, the World Economic Forum is a networking event with a significant carbon footprint. It's where the powerful discuss business, not global domination. Exciting prospects emerged for India to become the AI 'back office' of the world, reinforcing the importance of global collaboration. In this era of uncertainty, we must embrace change and actively contribute to rebuilding trust. The emotional heartbeat behind this imperative lies in understanding why countries are hesitant to trust each other, why governance structures falter, and why businesses follow a similar path. We salute the theme of trust and pledge to contribute in a conversational manner because today's world demands the rebuilding of trust. Trustworthy communication across borders will help us grow in this age of technology and redefine the essence of collaborative progress. As the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos kicks off with the theme of "Rebuilding Trust," it’s relevant to better understand trust in the organization itself. Based on our 2022 Glocalities survey results from 25 countries, 39% of respondents lack trust in the WEF, while only 27% trust the organization. The remaining 34% are unsure. How can this distrust be understood? Distrust in WEF Reflects Larger Trust Crisis in Advanced Economies: Rulers versus Rebels   The survey results highlight that the World Economic Forum is especially trusted by people who belong to the Glocalities values segment of Achievers. Achievers feel attracted to the Ruler archetype, which stands for power, progress and taking responsibility. They tend to focus on networking, career advancement, are interested in politics and believe in technological progress. Achievers express high levels of trust in institutions in general.   On the other hand, people who distrust the WEF tend to resonate more with the Rebel archetype. They value freedom, being independent and imaginative. People who distrust the WEF express low levels of trust in institutions in general and are more worried than others about the gap between the rich and poor, corruption, and freedom of expression.   People who don’t trust Davos often live in advanced economies in Europe, such as Spain, France, Switzerland (where the WEF meeting is held), Italy, Germany, Belgium, the UK, Romania, and Austria.   Rebuilding trust starts with reconnecting and driving conversations with societal segments that feel (and are) left behind.
