Despite Concerns Rare Earth Free Motors Take a Back Seat in EVs https://lnkd.in/eUzT2nEc The sourcing of materials and components is becoming an increasingly discussed topic across multiple industries. One huge growth sector is the electric vehicle (EV) market, with IDTechEx predicting 4 fold growth in electric car sales over the next 10 years. Much of the conversation is focused on battery materials, but the rare earths used in the magnets in electric motors are another key concern. These are almost entirely produced in China and have been subject to significant historic price volatility. Given these concerns, it is surprising to see that IDTechEx's research has found that rare earth permanent magnet motors have maintained over 77% of the electric car market over the last 9 years. Despite the step back in some countries like Germany due to the cancellation of the incentives, according to the BNEF forecast, over the next few years, EV activity will grow by an order of magnitude. Worldwide, at the beginning of 2023, there were fewer than 3️⃣ 0️⃣ million passenger EVs on the road. By 2026, that cumulative number will rise to over 💯 million. The 2nd BEV symposium at LUMS SDSB yesterday was an incredibly valuable opportunity as we explored the strides made in this space (34 manufacturing licences granted); development of an enabling environment (case studies from the developing economies of Asia and Latin America); and the complex challenges ahead (need for innovative financing solutions). It was inspiring to engage with industry leaders, innovators, financial experts, researchers, academia, technical specialists, government officials and policy advocates, all working towards accelerating sustainable mobility in Pakistan. The discussions truly enriched my understanding and fueled passion for driving positive change towards a sustainable energy transition. #EVAdoption #SustainableMobility
