For those fortunate enough to have shipping and manning agencies waiting for them to graduate, maintaining a good academic performance is crucial. Your grades may not define you, but they can position you well at the start of your career. To those whose fate fell short, many shipping companies in Manila are also open to hiring cadets, provided all requirements are present.
As an Engine or Deck cadet, having all essential documents is crucial. After graduation, secure your school records such as your Diploma or Completed Classroom Instruction (CCI) Certificate, Transcript of Record, and Good Moral Character Certificate. Companies may have their own requirements, but these three papers are generally important.
Since Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation cover three years of academic instruction, the remaining year to complete the four-year course involves onboard training. Cadets follow certain requirements to obtain licenses in both engineering and navigation.
According to the revised Joint CHED-MARINA Memorandum Circular number 01-2022, cadets must undergo sea-going service to qualify for the conferment of the degree, enabling them to take assessments for the officer-in-charge of navigational watch or officer-in-charge of engineering watch.
The documentation of this process can be seen in the Training Record Book (TRB), developed by Global Met and ISF, and a daily journal recording their daily watch-keeping activities onboard.
Besides school records, the TRB, and daily journal, you should also secure these documents from your respective universities.
