I’m truly devastated to hear the news that Sir Howard Bernstein has passed away. It is difficult to put into words the impact he had on Manchester but also on me personally. His love, vision and boldness for our city was unmatched. In the challenging world of politics and public service, he was a man who got things done and played the biggest role in building the Manchester we see today. Someone whom I view as my greatest mentor in my post football career. Just like Sir Alex gave me a chance in football, Sir Howard gave me a chance in my second love, property. I remember my first ever Mipim with him and he asked me “Can you deliver?” and I remember feeling the weight of responsibility I was taking on. I replied yes. He said “Good, let’s go for it”. When we hit problems with St Michaels he guided me and also wasn’t afraid to pull me to one side and tell me where I was going wrong. There were those that wanted to take the project off me when we made mistakes and got stuck but he stood strong. I will never forget the loyalty and trust he had in me. I’ve been fortunate to spend some time with him in the last few months and his words and advice are gold. The biggest lesson I learned from him was that leadership is about making sure you bring people along with you on the journey. Your idea may be great, but if you haven’t got people on side it won’t work. These lessons were invaluable to me. I will miss terribly our conversations/debates about property and particularly about our clubs United and City. I want to send all my love to Sir Howard’s family. 💔 Rest in Peace Sir Howard 🩵❤️

I can only endorse your words Gary, as seeing him in action during my time on the City board guiding us in the process of building the Etihad!! Whilst he was unashamedly a City fan he was TRULY A “MANCUNIAN” RIP SIR HOWARD 🙏🙏🙏. Dennis Tueart

It's so nice to see and hear people understanding a 'people first' approach. I am a true believer that success is built on good people, not money, not clever people or ideas but the people who can bring the ideas to life. If you look after good people, the people look after you

I was privileged to attend a meeting with him,( representing the Arts Council) in discussions with Treasury and DCMS officers (somewhat belatedly) about the sign off of the Factory International project. It was held in Whitehall in one of those "shock and awe" meeting rooms with an extraordinary 17th century plaster ceiling. Including spads the government side had about a dozen people attending. They were clearly irked at having been asked to review a "done deal". There were three of us from Manchester. Sir Howard listened patiently while the officials talked for about twenty five minutes (essentially amongst themselves) about the strengths and weaknesses of the proposals and whether all the risks were fully understood and mitigated. After this Howard spoke very briefly in response, essentially saying, though of course I paraphrase, "Thank you, but I think you will find the Chancellor and PM are fully behind this project" ( meaning, even more succinctly, "Don't waste my time") We left about five minutes after that. An absolute masterclass in dealing with mid ranking bureaucrats.

Oh no, that is sad news. A fine tribute to one of the finest manager's of a meeting. I've attended a lot of seemingly meaningless, directionless and long-winded meetings. But, not with Sir Howard, niceties, straight to the point and you came out knowing exactly what you needed to know and what to do next. A true gentleman and legend.

Gary Neville oh this very sad news, although I didn’t have the opportunity to work with Sir Howard for long, his support to me and wider colleagues on our devolution proposals for Hampshire was excellent. Utilising his experience of leading Manchester and his deep understanding & commitment to genuinely helping people and solving problems , it was a short but incredibly insightful 6 months. He shone through as a character of vision, commitment & a fun personality. My best wishes and condolences to his family and friends 🙏🙏

Take time to process this Gary Neville and grieve. It may take a while for you get over such a loss. Remember the great times with him and he is always going to be around you. The mentoring will always make sure you have memories of him personally and in your work. Maybe take some time off for you now or after the euros. When you feel it is time to process the loss of your inspirational mentor. He sounds like he was a great man.

Beautiful words, how lucky you were to have him mentor you, now you will carry this forward as you influence and mentor others x a wonderful gift
