Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is a carbon negative energy solution, capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while producing renewable energy. This makes it the only carbon removal technology that produces carbon negative energy. #carboncapture #carbonstorage #bioenergy To fight #climatechange the world needs to reduce its GreenHouse Gas emissions. There are sectors where this is much harder to achieve, such as aviation or heavy industry. To compensate for those sectors, a report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated that the deployment of carbon dioxide removals is unavoidable. #carbonremovals #BECCS delivers high-quality carbon removals at a reasonable price while also supporting energy security, but the current market needs to be reformed for its carbon removals to be appropriately valued. For this, the EU should set up a proper framework for BECCS that is reflected in the Carbon Removals Certification Framework (CRCF) and in the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA). The European Commission has approved, under #EUStateaid rules, a €998 million Dutch scheme to support the production of #renewablehydrogen. 🎯The measure aims to contribute to the development of renewable #hydrogen in line with the objectives of the #EUHydrogenStrategy and the #EUGreenDeal. The scheme will also contribute to the objectives of the #REPowerEU Plan to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels and accelerate the #greentransition. 💦The scheme will support the construction of at least 200 MW of #electrolysis capacity. 🍃The Netherlands expects that the scheme will lead to the equivalent of around 55 kilotons of #CO2 being avoided every year until 2030, which will contribute to the Netherlands' and EU's #climate targets. Great to see the robust use of renewable liquid fuels at the Port of Tacoma - a critical maritime gateway on the #USWC. While many can appreciate the concept of Zero-Emissions on-road and off-road equipment…the big heavy specialized equipment is bookoo bucks…sure #BEV yard hostlers are a good use case….but that doesn’t translate as directly when talking about Heavy-Duty Class 8 #Drayage trucks… It is short-sided to rush into direct or indirect #HDZE mandates when proven, sustainable and affordable fuel sources exist for today’s diesel and natural gas #ICE engines of all shapes and sizes…these fuels can acheive immediate real world emissions reductions with basically zero additional costs. This is especially critical to examine when basically ZERO #HD charging #infrastructure is available for Drayage trucks servicing the terminals at both the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma in the The Northwest Seaport Alliance…there are clearly better (cheaper and immediate) approaches to emissions reductions. In my experience the State of California approach of “Ready, FIRE, Aim” doesn’t work when it comes to #HDZE sales or in-use mandates. #DontDoCalifornia
It's called R99: a 99% renewable drop-in fuel that can run in any diesel engine. It offers a 60 to 75% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions and 20 to 30% reduction in particulate matter, and the #PortofTacoma has been using it since May for our cargo-handling equipment. The #ClimateChange Management Bill should include a zero carbon unit to incentivize emission reductions. While local mitigation is key, we must also focus on the value of protecting the environment & critical minerals needed for renewable energy systems. #ClimateAction

#CO2 #Germany On 26 February, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (#BMWK) presented the following documents: 📌 Key points of a Carbon Management Strategy https://lnkd.in/di6iWMWE 📌 Key points of a long-term strategy for negative emissions to deal with unavoidable residual emissions (LNe) https://lnkd.in/dNXJx-JS 📌 The Draft of Amendments to the Carbon Dioxide Storage Act https://lnkd.in/dZAHnA7r 📌 FAQ on CCU and CCS https://lnkd.in/dP_WZnm4 ✅ The main abbreviations: CCS - Carbon Capture and Storage; CCU - Carbon Capture and Usage; BECCU/S - BioEnergy with Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage; WACCU/S - Waste Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage; DACCU/S - Direct Air Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage/Sequestration. ☑ The key points are presented separately for: 📍 CCS/CCU; and 📍 negative emissions (DACCS, BECCS). ❓ What is the difference between CCS/CCU and negative emissions (DACCS, BECCS)? ◾ CCS and CCU do not ensure that CO2 is removed from the atmosphere. ◾ Negative emissions occur when CO2 is removed from the air or the CO2 content in the atmosphere is actively reduced in some other way. ◾ Negative emissions are possible through natural and technical processes, such as DACCS - Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage. ◾ Unlike CCS and CCU, DACCS allows active capture of CO2 directly from the air. However, the technology cannot yet be used on a large scale and they require high energy costs. ◾ Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage is a combination of the use of biomass for energy with subsequent CO2 capture and utilization or geological storage of the CO2. ◾ What DACCS, BECCS, CCS and CCU have in common is that the captured CO2 is either permanently stored in the geological subsurface or bound to a product in the long term.

🌍 Climate News: Germany Unveils Carbon Management Strategy 🌱 The German government unveiled key elements of its Carbon Management Strategy. Similar to the European Commission, Germany emphasized the need for carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCUS) to achieve climate neutrality goals but acknowledges that the focus should be on hard-to or impossible-to-abate sectors. Key Takeaways from the Strategy: 🔍 State support prioritizes hard-to-abate sectors like lime, cement, and waste. 🏭 CCS is enabled for other industry sectors and gas power plants - coal power plants are excluded. 🌿 The strategy incorporates Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), unlocking the potential for negative emissions in the power sector. However, further details will be outlined in the long-term strategy on negative emissions and the national biomass strategy. 💧 Captured CO2 is slated to be stored beneath the seabed; the pipeline network should be operated privately. Implications for Carbon Prices: 📈 Given Germany's significant emissions footprint in Europe, this strategy holds the potential to influence carbon price expectations. 💰 Support for CCS in hard-to-abate sectors could reduce medium- to long-term carbon prices by accelerating emission reductions at a lower cost.
