📢 Today, the Gas for Climate consortium launches a new study on the positive impact of #CCUS and best practices to accelerate the deployment of CCUS infrastructure. Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies are experiencing a new political momentum and are an indispensable tool (and in some cases the only tool, specifically in hard-to-abate sectors) in reaching the EU goal of #climate neutrality by 2050. The EU has clearly outlined paths to climate neutrality which include large-scale industrial CCUS, thereby underlining the importance of facilitating a rapid and efficient scale-up of the CCUS value chain. This paper assesses best short- and long-term practices associated with CCUS deployment while providing a holistic overview of the current #policy and regulatory landscape related to CCUS across Europe. 📚 Download the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gE6kn_8 #GasforClimate #carbon #carbonemissions #climatesolutions #policy #EU #netzero #decarbonization #energytransition #insfrastructure #webinar

📢 Don't Miss Out: New report "CCS Reality Check" Advocating for Targeted Use of CCS The recent report by European Environmental Bureau is a must-read for all stakeholders concerned about our planet's future. It emphasizes the targeted and judicious application of CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technology. With public funds at a premium, it's imperative to allocate resources wisely in the service of the public good. ❗ The key message is that #ccs should be regarded as an expensive and valuable resource, not the primary solution for decarbonization. While some advocate for increased subsidies for CCS, it's crucial to recognize its limitations and potential to perpetuate fossil fuel dependence. Instead, we must prioritize solutions that truly combat climate change effectively. EEB's stance is clear: if public policies support CCS deployment, it must align with the broader public interest, meaning that: - Align CCS deployment with the EU's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, prioritizing renewable energy and non-combustion industrial processes. 🌍 - Utilize CCS as a last resort for industrial processes that cannot decarbonize through alternative means, such as renewable electricity, electrification, material substitution, and efficiency measures. 🛠️ - Ensure that CCS implementation does not undermine other environmental policies, such as pollution and waste prevention and reduction at the source through increased circularity and energy and material. 🌱 - Hold the oil and gas sector accountable for its role in climate change by requiring substantial and long-term contributions to CCS efforts, including providing storage sites and bearing the cost of infrastructure and monitoring. ⚖️ - Publicly disclose capture rates for CCS projects, with projects below 90% capture rate ineligible for public support, and implement penalties for insufficient capture rates. 📊 - Implement rigorous safety measures and monitoring protocols for CCS facilities to ensure long-term safety and reliability. 🚧 - Advocate for the permanent storage of CO2 and discourage its use as a feedstock or in products with retention times shorter than multiple centuries through public policy. 🛢️ #ClimateAction #CCS #Sustainability #PublicInterest #Decarbonization European Commission EU Environment and Climate Read the report ⬇ https://lnkd.in/eY5k4ijz

🌍 The 2024 ECNO report on EU progress towards climate neutrality is out now! Discover key insights into how the EU is advancing towards its climate targets, with a special focus on climate, just transition, biodiversity, and governance. Explore comprehensive assessments and learn about the critical areas needing accelerated action 🌱 Executive Summary & Full Report 👇
🌟 Launched today: State of progress to EU climate neutrality Where does the EU stand on its journey to become climate neutral at the dawn of the new EU policy cycle? ⚠The second annual progress report by ECNO shows positive movement in most sectors and cross-cutting areas, but the pace is still too slow to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Compared to ECNO’s 2023 assessment, all building blocks of a climate neutral society stayed within the same progress category. However, there are promising changes bubbling under the surface! In six of the assessed building blocks – especially #electricity, #industry, #cleantech, #JustTransition – ECNO has unveiled notable improvements in enabling conditions for the transition, for example: The share of variable renewable electricity generation increased by 2.2%-points per year – a notable improvement to last year’s assessment. Likewise, employment in the renewable energy sector grew significantly, now totalling almost 1.7 million full time equivalents. In contrast, a sharp U-turn is needed in #finance and carbon dioxide removals #CDR, which are moving in the wrong direction. Explore all the findings and key recommended policy actions: 🔗 Read the full report here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ek_XuhCd 🔗 Read the summary for policy-makers here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dtpTmXSS ECNO was launched in 2023 aims to help the EU achieve climate neutrality by 2050 by providing scientifically rigorous annual checks of real-life progress across 13 economic sectors and cross-cutting areas. This year’s report looks at changes across a comprehensive set of 124 indicators and analyses policy contexts. #climateobservatory #EUpolicy #climateneutrality #progressreport #ECNOlaunch

The European Climate Neutrality Observatory (ECNO) has published their annual progress report on the state of EU progress on climate neutrality. 🚧 Sectoral progress across six key areas is either in the wrong direction (carbon dioxide removal), far too slow (agrifood, industry, mobility, buildings), or too slow (electricity). 🌱 In the agrifood sector, the focus of the AENEAM project, efforts on emissions from food processing, transport and packaging is considered far too slow. 💡 The AENEAM project is a step in the right direction, aiming to improve energy efficiency and seeking a 50% increased rate of implementation of EE-related measures. ⬇️ Look through the ECNO's post to find the full report, as well as their findings and policy recommendations. #energyefficiency #climateneutrality #LIFEprojects CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency

This morning I had the pleasure to present insights on carbon capture and storage in the EU National Energy and Climate Plans at CCS Europe's side event at the European Commission's #CCUSForum here in Aalborg, Denmark. Throughout 2023 Clean Air Task Force has been working to assist EU Member States with their National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), publishing our flagship report 'Bridging the Planning Gap' back in September ➡ https://lnkd.in/e75uEH-2 Since then, our carbon capture team has assessed the draft NECPs which 20/27 EU Member States have submitted thus far. As I presented this morning, some Member States have submitted comprehensive plans for #CCS deployment as part of their plan to reach climate neutrality, while others have much work to do. Our policy brief provides guidance to policymakers and other stakeholders on how NECPs can ensure a comprehensive overview of #CCS deployment is considered in EU Member States, where it makes sense. The policy brief aims to provide guidance on issues like: ➡ Why EU Member States should embrace the opportunity to deploy carbon capture and storage to decarbonise their economies ➡How EU Member States can ensure cost-effective deployment of CCS through well-planned CO2 infrastructure hubs and networks ➡How EU Member States can move from theoretical estimates of CO2 storage capacity to bringing CO2 injection sites into operation. Feel free to check it out here ⤵ https://lnkd.in/e7M5ppWk

What? The funding from #HorizonEurope for #carbonremoval is decreasing? I didn't see this one coming. We mapped out how much EU's flagship R&I funding programme Horizon Europe is spending either directly or indirectly on #CDR. Whilst indirect funding is increasing, there is 30% less direct funding in 2023/2024 compared to 2021/2022. Here are our recommendations for improving the situation: 1. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: carbon removal is a family of methods of its own, and the differences with CCUS must be clear when designing new calls for projects. A more sophisticated approach that also targets the whole spectrum of CDR methods can pave the way for more dedicated funding towards CDR; 2. 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀: the EU has ambitious climate neutrality goals, but the current research and innovation funding support for carbon removal is not nearly enough to foster the technological development needed to meet goals and lead the global industry. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱; 3. 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: enhancing Horizon Europe’s support by expanding calls to encompass various technology readiness levels, action types, and carbon removal methods will be key.
