This is one of the classic points we found in our first Practice Thinkers course. The two areas what is random practice and what is blocked practice, what is variable and what is constant. They all have a position to play. Applying this as random practice is like playing Messi at left back, he can play there but it completely ineffective. This is another fantastic example of the message I am trying to help founders see differently. There is no guarantee of a “better future”. Its always a trade off between what we are willing to give up now for a longer term result. Work hard. Absolutely. But it is important to ask whether or not we’d still make the trade if that longer term result never came through. Optimism is great but it can also be incredibly costly. If you are a football coach, the beauty of the reality of responding to the surprise of the game is the applicable lesson we take from football to apply to life. In life how are you going to cheat your way through? In football, you learn nothing if you know the plays that are being played. You are actually cheating yourself of the true learning experience, of how to respond to the changing circumstances of life. It ain't going to happen. We each need to have the quick ability to respond to changing circumstances in our daily walk or drive through life. This is the true learning we gain from participating in sports. A coach who cheats doesn't really appreciate the lessons to be grained from honestly playing by the rules.
