Working for just transitions in the Global South

R135-billion. This is the amount of solar panels, lithium-ion #batteries, wind turbines and inverters imported by SA over the 2010 to 2022 period. Yet, SA has noteworthy manufacturing capabilities in the renewable energy and battery storage value chains. And market demand is booming. This points to a key industrial development opportunity for the country – the kind that only presents itself once in a century or so. The South African #renewableenergy Masterplan (SAREM) aims to seize the moment and put in place the necessary frameworks to drive the industrial and inclusive development of renewable energy and battery storage value chains in the country. You can read the draft plan here: bit.ly/3XWhPT5 It is out for public comment until 31 July 2023. You can send your inputs to [email protected]

Manufacturing facilities must be included not only for domestic demand but continental wide. This would also stem some pain from job losses on the coal generation side. It begins with DTIC putting sustainable incentives forward for PV manufacturers. Otherwise, production output in China will continue to rise significantly in the decades to come. DTIC must first kick the ball before others can start playing. We need more localisation policies.

Looking for developers in SA... Are you an energy developer in South Africa, kindly contact so we do some green energy projects?

The South African #renewableenergy Masterplan (SAREM) sounds like a crucial initiative to capitalize on this moment and drive the growth of renewable energy and battery storage value chains within the country. Developing these industries locally would not only foster economic growth but also contribute significantly to sustainable development and environmental preservation. I hope the SAREM successfully puts in place the necessary frameworks to support and catalyze the domestic renewable energy sector. #renewableenergy #sustainability #greenfuture #cleanenergy #focusenergy

Thanks Gaylor for a very comprehensive Plan. The Megamillion Energy Company is Africa's first Lithium-ion battery megafactory project. Some people question why our project it is taking so long, but as you rightly point out, this is a frontier project. Not every man and his dog can pull this off, and to attract investment of $2 billion is not an overnight exercise. The UK's BritishVolt didnt get it right and closed doors. However, since the demand for battery storage in SA is established (due to the amazing marketing of ESKOM) with real data and a strong pipeline until 2025, the prospects are far better today for the localization of cell manufacturing and the components value chain. We are happy to announce: Watch this space in the next few weeks for ground-breaking announcements from Megamillion related to our developments in battery component manufacturing in Zambia, EV battery pack manufacturing for locally made electric scooters, minibus taxis and commuter buses, and more exciting news. Megamillion expresses support for the Masterplan and we remain committed to working with all partners in achieving the outcomes of the strategy. www.megamillion.africa #megamillionenergy #dtic #lithiumionbatteries #southafrica

This was a mantra during my time leading work on climate in SA - don't see renewable energy and clean tech as a threat to coal, but an opportunity to build a whole new sets of industries in support of the new economy. Investment and growth will be inspired by an unequivocal vision and market certainty that government policy can bring. Keep up the great work Gaylor Montmasson-Clair

👏 Thank you for sharing this insightful post! The amount of renewable energy infrastructure imported by SA over the past decade is remarkable, highlighting the growing market demand for clean energy solutions. I believe that with collective efforts and collaboration, SA can seize this once-in-a-century opportunity to become a global leader in renewable energy innovation and contribute significantly to a cleaner and more sustainable future. 🌿🌞💚

The full EV supply chain can be built in Africa. Massive opportunity for African entrepreneurs.
