A few years ago, a story in the The New York Times told the tale of a hospitalized man and his family who received devastating news via a video call. On this call, the man and his family were informed that his condition was terminal and he didn't have much time left to live. Understandably, this method of providing such sensitive information caused great distress to the patient and his family. The patient's wife stated, "I just don't think that critically ill patients should see a screen. It should be a human being with compassion." This incident highlights an important issue in modern healthcare: the risk of losing human interactions in our rush to embrace new technologies. There is no doubt that advancements in genomics, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence provide sophisticated possibilities for improving diagnosis and treatment. But these tools should complement and never replace compassion, conversations, and human in-person interactions between a doctor and their patient. Physicians at a very early stage are taught the principle of “ To cure when possible, to care always”. The incident reported in the NY Times serves as an important reminder that no matter how advanced our medical technology is, there will always be a need for empathy and compassion in health care. We will and must continue to innovate and improve our ability to treat illnesses, and at the same time, we must not lose sight of the equally important task of caring for the whole person, especially during their most vulnerable times. And if we can put both of these together, that has the potential of being optimal patient care!
