🌟Exciting Discussion at the Society of Experiential Education Conference! I had the privilege of presenting on "Utilizing Remote Internships to Increase Access for Underrepresented Populations" at the recent conference, and it sparked a fantastic group discussion on a pressing issue in higher education. Internships are a crucial part of career readiness, but underrepresented students often face significant barriers, whether it's juggling time, finances, or personal commitments. These hurdles can limit their participation and engagement. Virtual Internships aim to level the playing field by removing these obstacles. It's about ensuring access and flexibility for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances. During the presentation, I highlighted the positive impact of the Virtual Internship program, especially when combined with intentional employability support. We're seeing students develop essential competencies, gain confidence, and ultimately, improve their employment outcomes. It's inspiring to see how remote internships can make a real difference in the lives of underrepresented students, opening doors to new opportunities. First-generation students (FGS) make up 1/3 of all undergraduate students yet they are still lagging behind on key economic outcomes according to the Pew Research Center. FGS make 36k less than their non-first generation counterparts. Only 26% of FGS are obtaining their degrees. Roughly 65% of first-generation college graduates owe at least $25,000 or more in student debt. What strategies and initiatives can we implement to support and empower these students to succeed? -Targeted initiatives such as "Debunking the Internship Search" or "Internship Panels" where career development specialist and industry professionals can walk students through the process of obtaining an internship from start to finish -Diversity and Inclusion programs that partner with companies that actively support these values -Mentorship programs that provide students with with connections to professionals in their interest areas
