Exciting News from Geo-Instruments! We recently had the fantastic opportunity to send a few of our r field teams from across the nation to Geokon’s headquarters in Lebanon, NH. The visit was a comprehensive refresher course on the best practices for installing and operating VW strain gauges, inclinometers, and a suite of other geotechnical instruments. A huge shout-out to the Geokon team, with a special thanks to Rob Clark and Joelle Lang, for facilitating a seamless and enriching experience. At Geo-Instruments, we believe in the power of investing in our team. With our tradition of biennial in-house training, we’re thrilled to announce our next 4-day session coming up in November 2024. It’s going to be an invigorating gathering, full of insightful discussions on instrumentation and monitoring. A really interesting and great project in Algeria.
Sisgeo supplied and installed a complete instrumentation system for the monitoring of the Ouldjet Mellègue dam, a Roller-Compacted concrete gravity dam in northeastern Algeria. Sisgeo was also in charge of the training of local ANBT technical staff (Agence National Barrage et Transfer) for system maintenance. We managed to bring an increase in terms of safety and efficiency of the structure with a reduction of costs. The 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥 𝐀 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 is a 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞(⊛) situated offshore in the Troll gas field, off the west coast of Norway, now operated by Equinor. Its 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 is to extract natural gas from the North Sea.🛢️🌊 To this day, Troll A platform still holds the record as 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 ever moved by mankind, and 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 ever relocated. Here we have some fascinating details: ● 𝐃𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: ► Overall height: 𝟒𝟕𝟐 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 (1,549 feet). ► Weight: 𝟔𝟖𝟑,𝟔𝟎𝟎 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 (1.2 million tons with ballast). ► The platform stands on four legs extending down to the sea floor 𝟑𝟎𝟑 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 (994 feet) below the surface of the sea. ► The leg containing the import and export risers has an elevator that takes 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬 to travel from the platform above the waves to the sea floor. ● 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: ► The legs are made of 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐥-𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞 formed in one continuous pour. ► Each leg is a mathematically joined composite of several 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 that flare out smoothly to greater diameters at the top and bottom. ► The legs are sub-divided along their length into compartments that act as independent 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫-𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 compartments. ► A reinforced concrete box, known as a “𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫,” connects the legs and damps out any potentially destructive wave-leg resonances. ► The platform was penetrated 𝟑𝟔 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 into the soil. ► It is 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, requiring no further mooring. ● 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: ► The platform adheres to strict environmental regulations; in fact measures are in place to 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞 the impact on marine ecosystems and wildlife. ► Regular inspections and maintenance ensure 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 and 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 compliance.
