Who are the people in your neighborhood? Are you taking the time to meet those who live around you, and learn their stories? Business owners, college professors, and air traffic controllers are just a few examples of people who live around me Recently, I had a conversation with one neighbor who owns a catering business, and learned a big lesson, here’s the story: On an evening walk, I learned my neighbor was in the restaurant industry for 50 years before focusing just on catering Before owning restaurants, he studied Marketing at Penn State, what was the biggest lesson he learned there? “Marketing is all about your differentiator” When I asked him his catering business differentiator, he told me: 1. “We make it a personal experience” They recently did a foot tasting for a wedding, where his wife makes the food right in front of them, and he serves it - showing the personal touch and care they provide, and what they bring to their events 2. “We handle the entire process for our customers” Most catering companies just provide food, and guests have to rent the china, cups, silverware, etc. They rent the silverware to their guests, thus increasing “ACV” _____________________________________ The lessons I learned? 1. No matter the fluffy words that others put around marketing, it is all about highlighting your competitive differentiator 2. Provide your customers with the entire solution. Looking at the whole picture puts less on your customers, and provides them with a full experience Ask your neighbor what they did for a living, you are bound to learn something

Save the Dates: SRA Virtual Calls are a great benefit exclusively for state restaurant association staff members. Some calls have been scheduled to occur only in even months. Additionally, should a meeting coincide with a holiday or conflict with a prearranged event, efforts will be made to coordinate an alternative time or date for the meeting. #collaboration #businessdevelopment #communications #marketing #membership

It was great to see the hospitality industry coming together at Machine Hall for the inaugural Good Food Symposium. Guests heard from Callan Boys Alessandro Pavoni Huss Rachin, Palisa Anderson Rebecca Fanning and Patrick Ryan-Parker sharing their ideas and expertise on how to juggle the complexities of the current economic situation, staffing, pricing, social media and communication. As a newcomer into hospitality (Machine Hall Cafe) there were so many takeaways (pardon the pun 😩): Value creation is more about experience than price with familiar and more personal service driving loyalty - no more 'good evening Madam' A strong team culture can keep highly transient staff engaged. Giving them a shared vision of the future provides them with an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. Staff are an extension of your brand so time invested in them is always time well spent. Google reviews are vital - so ask happy customers to post or only negatives prevail. Answer all negative reviews personally as this will enable brand messaging. Businesses need to be multi platform business, comms are crucial and EDM’s sitting in the shadow of socials are the key to drive immediate sales. Cheers! Nine #hospitality
