mer. 11 oct. à 11 h 33 Before the ministers discussed the cultural policy issues, they reaffirmed their solidarity with Israel: “We stand firmly by Israel’s side in these dark hours and condemn in the strongest possible terms these terrorist attacks on the people of Israel. Our thoughts are with the families of the many victims, with the hostages and their uncertain fate, with the countless injured. The entire inhumane insidiousness of these attacks was particularly evident in the bestial massacre of young people celebrating peacefully and happily at a music festival.” Important stage for the German-French provenance research fund The focus of the subsequent cultural policy exchange was initially on the planned German-French provenance research fund. It is intended to usher in a new phase in the processing of the cultural heritage of sub-Saharan Africa. To this day, large parts of them are located outside of their respective countries and regions of origin, and many of them are in European collections. Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth and French Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak signed a declaration on the structure and scope of the fund, which is scheduled to start in February 2024 with a pilot phase of three years. Both countries each provide up to 360,000 annually. The aim is to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the area of provenance research on collection items from sub-Saharan Africa. “We are now taking joint responsibility for cultural assets, many of which are still of great symbolic, artistic and historical value for the communities of origin, and are paving the way for equal cultural relations between Europe and the partner countries in sub-Saharan Africa,” explained Roth in Hamburg. Culture Pass – symbol of German-French cooperation The Culture Pass was introduced in Germany based on the French model. The Culture Pass for 18-year-olds, which the federal government introduced in June this year based on the model of the French Culture Pass, was another topic at the ministerial meeting. “Thanks to the French example and thanks to the support of my French colleague Rima Abdul Malak and her house, we were able to implement the KulturPass in Germany in record time and launch it very successfully. “It is a symbol of successful German-French cooperation in the cultural sector,” said Roth. The next step is to enable German-French use of the KulturPass.

🌟 It’s almost Christmas! Did you know that this holiday is known by different names around the world, each one reflecting the unique cultural background of the feast in various countries? 🏴 🇳🇱 In English and Dutch, the names come from the words for “Christ” and “mass”, and both terms have their origins in the Middle Ages. 🇪🇸 🇮🇹 🇵🇱 🇬🇪 Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Georgian, among a multitude of others, refer to “birth”, with the Romance languages ultimately deriving the words from, you guessed it, Latin. 🇩🇪 🇦🇹 🇨🇭 🇱🇮 Europe’s German-speaking countries use a word whose etymology is a term meaning “holy night”. You might immediately associate it with the world’s most popular carol! 🇸🇪 🇩🇰 🇳🇴 🇫🇮 🇮🇸 Nordic nations use different local names of the ancient Norse feast of Yule. Interestingly, it’s that way both in Scandinavian Germanic languages and the Finno-Ugric Finnish. You may have also heard the English term “yule log”. 🇪🇹 Last but not least, perhaps the most uncommon rendition. Ethiopia’s Amhara people use a single word, which means “a day of glory”. As in Georgia, Christmas is celebrated in Ethiopia during the standard Gregorian calendar’s January – a great example of how historical events shape the year-long routines of contemporary people! 🎄 Similar to how translations bring people of all nations together, all holiday celebrations are occasions to slow down a little bit, show kindness to one another, enjoy some time with loved ones, and just do whatever makes you feel cosiness and ease of mind. We wish you the happiest Christmas and a prosperous New Year! #christmas #localization #translation #multilingualcontent

Cultural traditions, integral to each society worldwide, define heritage and create distinct identities. However, newcomers to foreign countries often anticipate locals to conform to their own customs. Unlike language, these traditions are deeply rooted in individuals from birth, shaping their behavior, facial expressions, hand gestures, and cultural practices. It's crucial for people to recognize that what may be considered sensible and polite in one country might be perceived differently in another. To navigate this cultural diversity and avoid appearing disrespectful, it's essential to understand unique customs worldwide. For instance, giving flowers to Russian associates requires caution, as certain colors convey negative meanings. In China, cultural traditions include superstitions about gifts, such as avoiding items associated with death. Similarly, practices like asking for salt in Egypt or being punctual in different countries carry distinct cultural interpretations. Table manners vary, with Norway using utensils even for sandwiches. Gift-giving taboos, like sharp objects in the Netherlands, are shared with China. Each country has its own rituals, such as tossing baby teeth onto roofs in Greece or refraining from clinking glasses in Hungary due to historical events. Business discussions in Bolivia during social occasions and avoiding going Dutch in Turkey for meals exemplify cultural nuances. Additionally, South Korea frowns upon using red ink for writing names. Finland's sauna invitations signify successful business meetings, and Australians prefer sitting in front in taxis. Various greetings, from handshakes in Germany to cheek kisses in France and Brazil, reflect cultural norms. Unique customs, like finger-pulling in Austria and age-related traditions in Germany and France, highlight diverse societal practices. Even birthday celebrations differ, with face-shoving on cakes in Mexico and wife-carrying as a competitive sport in Finland. Recognizing and respecting these cultural intricacies is essential to avoid cultural misunderstandings, especially in a globalized world where language services play a crucial role in bridging these cultural gaps during travel or business interactions.
