Today, we celebrate International Mother Language Day with the UN, a time to reflect on how language safeguards peace and understanding. The theme for this year is “Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning”. Multilingual societies rely on their varied languages to share and preserve knowledge sustainably. As more languages disappear and linguistic diversity becomes threatened, movements such as Anseye Pou Ayiti (APA), who advocate for mother language-based education, become more pivotal in sustaining the culture and innate strengths of their communities. APA’s commitment to preserving cultural identity by providing equitable education for the next generation of Haitian students is reflected in all aspects of the organization — from being a Haitian-grown and -led organization working with communities and its teachers to prioritizing the Kreyol language to address the influence of colonialism on their education system (see https://lnkd.in/gynGdJXi). APA CEO Nedgine Paul Deroly recognizes the importance of their advocacy for language diversity through education: "As the first Black republic, Haiti still has a major role in anti-racism and liberation efforts around the world... APA will be a model for all other countries where the education system remains a vestige of colonialism.” The preservation and education of languages is a continuous challenge, and through the efforts of organizations like Anseye Pou Ayiti, succeeding generations can cherish and learn from traditions and values passed on through their mother tongue. #AnseyePouAyiti #Haiti #Changemakers #ImpactStories #PeopleOfPurpose #dogood #InternationalMotherLanguageDay #EquitableEducation #UNESCO #SDG4 #SDG10 #SDG16 #InclusiveLanguage

February 21st marks UNESCO's International Mother Language Day which aims at preserving linguistic diversity. 🔸️Fatemeh Karimi, a Kurdish WHRD from Iran "The right to education in one's mother tongue is a fundamental human right that millions of non-Persian-speaking children are deprived of. Advocating for this right, defending and recognizing it officially among justice advocates, is a benchmark of the humanistic approach and acceptance of human rights towards fair allocation and distribution of educational opportunities. A multilingual education approach for students whose mother tongue differs from the formal education language allows them to bridge the gap between home and school, explore the school environment in a familiar language, and consequently learn better. Multilingualism contributes to developing inclusive societies and allows for the coexistence and mutual enrichment of "cultures, worldviews, and knowledge systems." 🔸️On International Mother Language Day, Femena stands in solidarity with all WHRDs working to preserve their language, culture and heritage, and stresses the strength and beauty in our diversity. #motherlanguageday #روز_جهانی_زبان_مادری

Today is International Mother Language Day! Growing up as a third-culture kid and living outside the country of my nationality, my #motherlanguage helped me stay connected to my grandmother who isn't fluent in English. My mother tongue is Hindi. What is yours? Are there any relatable and memorable moments that you would like to share? #internationalmotherlanguageday #diversity #inclusion #languagematters
Languages represent who we are. Protecting this identity is a matter of human rights. Yet, linguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages disappear, taking with them an entire cultural and intellectual heritage. In many countries, students are taught in a language other than their mother tongue, which compromises their ability to learn effectively. On Wednesday's International Mother Language Day, join UNESCO in calling for mother tongue-based education: https://lnkd.in/e4VtKMM

Happy International Mother Language Day! International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999. The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh. The UN General Assembly welcomed the proclamation of the day in its resolution of 2002. On 16 May 2007 the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/61/266 called upon Member States "to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world". By the same resolution, the General Assembly proclaimed 2008 as the International Year of Languages, to promote unity in diversity and international understanding, through multilingualism and multiculturalism and named the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to serve as the lead agency for the Year. Today there is growing awareness that languages play a vital role in development, in ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, but also in strengthening cooperation and attaining quality education for all, in building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage, and in mobilizing political will for applying the benefits of science and technology to sustainable development. ttps://https://lnkd.in/eaucXUp5

International Mother Language Day promotes language preservation and protection globally. The 2024 theme is “Multilingual education – a pillar of learning and intergenerational learning.” Multilingual education policies are crucial for bridging home-school barriers, preserving Indigenous languages, and ensuring inclusive development. Currently, 40% of the global population lacks access to education in their native language, a figure that exceeds 90% in certain regions. The only Indigenous-led, report of its kind in Canada, the 2022 Language Status Report gathered information from 140,195 First Nations people living in 167 First Nations communities in B.C. reveals a more than 20% growth in First Nations language learners since 2018. 🌍 "Learn a new language and you will avoid a war." 🌍 This ancient Arab proverb holds a powerful truth that resonates across cultures and time. At Tobian Language School, we believe in the transformative power of language learning to foster understanding and promote peace. Learning a new language opens doors to empathy, communication, and mutual respect. Here's how: 1️⃣ **Cultural Understanding**: Language is deeply tied to culture. By learning any new language, you gain insights into different customs, traditions, and perspectives. This understanding fosters respect and appreciation for diversity. 2️⃣ **Effective Communication**: Language barriers often lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. When you can communicate in someone else's language, you build bridges and establish meaningful connections. Clear communication promotes harmony and reduces tensions. 3️⃣ **Empathy and Perspective-taking**: Learning a new language requires stepping into the shoes of native speakers. This process enhances empathy and encourages seeing the world from different viewpoints. Empathy is key to resolving conflicts peacefully. 4️⃣ **Diplomacy and Peace-building**: Language skills are essential in diplomacy and peace negotiations. When people can communicate effectively across languages, they are better equipped to resolve conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy. At Tobian Language School, we offer engaging language courses that not only teach you a new language but also promote cross-cultural understanding and global citizenship. Join us in embracing the transformative power of language to build a more peaceful world. Start your language learning journey today: https://lnkd.in/dJYcT37h #LanguageLearning #CulturalUnderstanding #PeaceBuilding #TobianLanguageSchool ---

✨ Unlocking Cultural Richness ✨ A common misconception: A-Levels are just for non-native speakers. Let's debunk that myth! Native French speakers, too, can benefit immensely. The program dives deep into our cultural heritage, fostering a rich understanding that goes beyond textbooks. It's not just a degree; it's a celebration of our identity. A study carried out showed that a language disappeared after 3 generations in expatriated families (Fishman, 1991). Although multiculturalism is fantastic, many families do not want to lose their roots and wish their children would embrace the richness of their cultural background. Through my years of teaching the French A-level curriculum, I've become convinced that it provides a great insight into the cultural, artistic, societal and political abundance of the "francophonie". That's why I'm on a mission to encourage French-speaking teenagers into the journey of embracing their heritage. 🥐 (also, note the irony of having a croissant showing up as the first emoji when typing "French" in the search bar... 🤦♀️😂) #CulturalRichness #FrenchHeritage #EducationForAll
