It's the season when students are starting to think about graduate school and Dietetic Internships, so here are my 5 tips for anyone writing a personal statement (from someone who didn't get into grad school on my first try!): 1. Address all of the specific questions in a school/program's prompt -- I know writing one statement for all of your apps seems like a good idea but if you miss a question in your statement, it implies you can't follow instructions and you'll be eliminated! 2. Answer: why grad school -- Yes, to become an #RD now, you *have* to go to grad school but what do you want to learn? Are you getting further nutrition education because you want to better understand research or a specific nutrition area? Or are you applying to a non-nutrition program to broaden your skillset when you become an RD? Why do you want to be an RD at all? Programs want to understand your desired trajectory 3. Answer: why *that* school/program/internship -- What do they do well that is attractive to you? For instance, my program specialized in community nutrition and that was important to me! Articulate that. 4. Answer: why they should admit *you* -- What skills/experience/culture/diversity do you bring with you into the program that would enrich your class? 5. Who might you want to work with/what might you want to do for a project -- Whether you want to work in a lab, or someone's published work appeals to you, let a program know that you might be a good fit to support someone's work/learn from someone. And introduce yourself to that person, ask if they are taking on graduate students to advice, and if they might have any funding for you before you send in your app! If someone in the department vouches for you/wants you in the program, your odds of getting in increase! #rd2be #dietitian #graduateschool

Taking baby steps, with the apprenticeship, new cases and their comprehensive treatment plan discussions with the pioneers, all you do is grow , you build your strength, rectify your loopholes from post graduation, and move proudly ahead. Scissor Skills! This was the first time our preschoolers used scissors and they had so much fun trying to cut on the lines and make it all the way to the doughnuts! Most of the time, we don’t think about how we’ve had to learn everything we do in life. Teaching these young minds how to use a tool that we think is a basic classroom necessity and seeing them learn how to “chomp the scissors like an alligator” was really eye opening for me. It was fun to use clever ways to teach them how to do something we think is fairly simple like cutting paper. We think about the next hard thing in our lives every day and for these little ones, their hard thing they had to accomplish was using scissors. Now as we’re older, using scissors is something we do without even thinking. Something that seemed impossible when we were young became something that comes naturally for us now. I think in life, we have to think about our hurdles like using scissors. It seems impossible now, but someday it will be something that gets easier and easier. We’ve all started our education journey from the very beginning and having this internship opportunity to be a part of these students’ beginnings is something I will never forget. 

Q: Describe your initial perspective of the career you are interning at. After being an intern there for a few weeks, how have your beliefs changed, and what are they currently? A: When I first started my internship doing math intervention at the elementary school I wondered how effective that classroom situation really was and if it would actually help the students catch up to where they were supposed to be. I didn’t really understand how it worked and how to best help the kids understand. Now that Ive been at the elementary school for awhile I’ve been able to see how effective intervention is. I’ve seen the kids we work with grow so much and watching them start to really understanding something is one of my big highlights. Giving the kids a space where they can catch up outside the pressure of a classroom that might make them feel like they’re constantly falling behind us super important and really beneficial.

The most crucial thing I had in my DI was the handwritten piece of paper I kept that had lab values and the health implications of those values. It had practically disintegrated in my pocket by the time my clinical rotations were over. ⁠ ⁠ Had all kinds of stains and holes where I’d creased and re-folded it a million times. Notes had been added in the corners and the print got smaller and smaller until I had to hunt to find empty space on the page. ⁠ Don't ask me why I didn't just re-write the thing. I guess I was kind of attached to the process of learning through note-writing.⁠ And that paper became like a security blanket. ⁠ I eventually made a downloadable handout with all the information on it. POST-INTERNSHIP PATHWAYS AND PROSPECTS. In the past week,I had the opportunity of moderating a webinar session where Dr Eleazer Douglas-Iyalla Pepple talked extensively about POST-INTERNSHIP PATHWAYS AND PROSPECTS. It was a great opportunity to "share the screen" with such a seasoned clinician and leader who consistently turns to light the path of those trailing in this profession. The webinar session was one of the events held to celebrate house officers in Babcock University Teaching Hospital. Few Lessons from this: 1. Impromptu or not, every moderating session is an opportunity to leave a lasting impact on your audience. 2. Re-echo the speaker's message at every opportunity. This makes it settle in the heart of your audience. 3. Ask yourself what the people hope to achieve by attending, then speak, act, and steer the conversation in the direction of this goal. Needless to say, the session was a great one with many positive comments and feedback.

Last week was my synoptic project week! 👩🏼💻 Since starting my apprenticeship with Baltic Apprenticeships in January 2023, I have learned so much about marketing and have been so lucky to get hands on experience in the industry. Something that I get to see a lot at my internship is EKGs! The picture below is one of the carts used at the hospital to get a 12 lead EKG. EKGs are used to check the electrical signals in the heart, and see if there are any abnormalities. The EKG Techs are awesome at answering any questions I have, and have taught me so much about EKGs and how the heart works. It’s been interesting to learn about all of the different things you can tell from reading an EKG and how to get a patient set up for one!
