When it comes to celebrating women, it is common to see conversations about their accomplishments. There is that huge tendency to concentrate on their results without paying as much attention to the journeys. Should we celebrate results and accomplishments? Absolutely. However, is our life bigger than an award, another project, or another promotion? Absolutely too! We must guard against the tendency to refuse to think ourselves great just as persons until we are able to "prove" ourselves with a result. Like my mentor says, we are human beings, and not human doings. Our lives are far greater than our results. Another international women's day is almost here. And in the midst of the celebrations of grand accomplishments, there is the need to also sustain conversations of the genuine beauty of simple womanhood. We need to see the beauty in the journey of women, not only in their accomplishments. We need more young women to see the beauty of the journeys of the women who have gone ahead, not only their results. This is why I am hosting the Emerging Women Summit as an International Women's Day event to celebrate the beauty of the journey of diverse women and learn how they navigate their everyday lives of being a career professional, entrepreneur, ministry gift, wife, mother, and more. Celebrating women who celebrate women. This Friday is International Women’s Day. Do you know why it matters? I used to think it odd to celebrate women’s day, as if we were to celebrate ourselves. It wasn't something I grew up with nor understood fully. Coming up in tech, I saw a lot of mysogyny, politics, machismo…I got used to it and learned to play the game. What's the game? Coming out stronger. Speaking up, balancing egos, firm when necessary, communicating to multiple view points, taking criticism, and establishing authority. That's just leadership, right? Wrong. Leadership is about fine tuning how you resonate and relate with others, not how you survive. Let's think about living in a world where everyone focused on resonating and relating, however. You wouldn't need to “survive” and negotiation wouldn't be about playing your cards right at every meeting. It would be about establishing trust, speaking to different viewpoints, mutual respect, and collaboration. This is when I began to see things differently. To honor International Women’s Day is about lifting up women and helping to spread their voice. Celebrating each other and helping eachother to succeed. Removing inner competition that keeps women down and linking arm in arm. I am now a speaker for International Women’s Day and couldn't be more thrilled to share this message. This year’s theme is: Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress. I couldn't imagine a better theme for this year. “Anna, why do you have to call this event ‘Women in Business’ but then you welcome men? Why can’t you call it ‘Men and Women in Business’?” someone asked me — I’ll let you guess the gender. I had to think about it. Here’s what I’ve noticed from events I’ve attended: unless specifically stated that it’s for women, the majority of the attendees are men. I did my rounds with women’s communities, but something always felt missing. So, I decided to create an event without an agenda other than wanting to meet new people who are open to making connections. I wanted to create a space where everyone feels welcome. I wanted it to be big enough yet small enough to be manageable. Twenty-five seemed to be a good number. As host (and control freak), I took attendance and gave out drink tickets, and I was pleasantly surprised to achieve perfect attendance. Everyone showed up, and on time! I loved the energy, conversations, and connections. It fills my heart to receive many lovely messages from attendees saying how much they enjoyed the event and meeting such inspiring women. It brings me joy to see the power of community in action. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this evening special. Let’s continue to uplift and empower one another! P.S. Reflecting on the craziness of International Women's Day last week, I've been thinking about all of my experiences from moments of soaring highs, where women's voices echoed triumphantly on stage, and through my social media pages, and then there were the lows, where we were reminded of the entrenched barriers that we still have to work on dismantling. But admis the progress and enduring traditions, one thing became clear, of all the incredible women in my life, be they family, friends, or colleagues (you know who you are!) there are two people who deserve more of my attention and focus than others. They are me, and my daughter. If I want to be a good Mum and also continue my work in creating healthy and connected communities, I must first look after me. For if I neglect my own well-being, the foundation upon which I build my support for others may fall. And as I look to the future, my daughter's future, it's crystal clear that she deserves a world that champions her growth, safety, and supports her to step into her power – whatever that may be! As International Women's Day 2024 becomes #solastweek, the resolve of women everywhere continues to get stronger. Each day, we rise, renewing our commitment to progress, resilience, and solidarity.
