Ike White joined National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Naval Reactors leaders on Capitol Hill to testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Strategic Forces Committee on Armed Services on their missions and commitments supporting U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s FY 2025 budget request.   In White’s opening statement, he emphasized EM’s commitment to cleaning up the environmental legacy of national defense programs that helped end World War II and the Cold War, stating that, “while our mission is rooted in the past, we’re focused on the future.”   White’s testimony highlights EM’s 35 years of progress, transformational results, steady progress planned for FY 2025, support for national security missions and how EM is investing in the future. The budget request allows for continued improvement to the rigor of program and project management, as well as opportunities to progress cleanup safely and more efficiently,   EM appreciates the Biden administration’s commitment to our vital mission. Why then are the Australian Government and the Federal Opposition not working to get it developed in Australia and bring it back home? New Zealand has, so why not Australia? Interesting articles about Nuclear and I know you haven't looked at Fusion. So let's look at the nuclear or Fission option versus Fusion 1. Helion Fusion has committed to having its fusion version working in 2028 11. The FIA (Fusion Industry Association) has postulated that commercial power fusion will be available in the 2030s. 12. In its fusion conference report in 2023, the IAEA postulated that all International nuclear (Fission) Laws like the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty do not consider fusion, so it seems it can be built in Australia now. 13. Fusion is also being developed "Small Modular Fusion Reactors" like Zap Energy and Avalanche Energy. 14. HB11 and the UNSW Tokamak project have positioned Australia prominently in the trillion-dollar international fusion industry. Instead of relying on fission with a limited lifetime, wouldn't it be preferable to support Australian renewables, batteries, and hydrogen energy generators and back them up with a fusion power plant? This would eliminate the traditional waste problem while still providing medical isotopes and advancements in medical technology like MRIs. Australia's submarine capability and the transition from 6 Collins to 8 nuclear subs is in turmoil. Senators are hearing from the Australian Submarine Corporation today about the unexpected corrosion problems in one of the youngest Collins subs and one of the oldest, with each out of operation for months, maybe longer depending on further assessment. This revelation fits with analysis of the Collins class future by SAA's Head of Research, Dr Marcus Hellyer released yesterday (link below). The bottom line: the Collins fleet will not serve in the Royal Australian Navy even through the 2030s, let alone into the late 2040s as Defence originally planned. Rethinking how much is to be done in a "Life of Type Extension" program, on how many of the 6 Collins subs, is necessary for two big reasons: 1. the condition of the boats is likely to mean it is prohibitively expensive and difficult to keep older subs operating much beyond their existing planned withdrawal dates (this is what is happening right now with the ANZAC Class frigates and their earlier than planned decommissioning), and 2. the crew and industrial workforce demands of the Virginia SSNs will mean that continuing to have 5 Collins crews and an onshore workforce to do both Collins and Virginia maintenance available into the mid-2030s isn't credible. The third phase of the AUKUS submarine deal centers around Australia and the U.K designing, building and operating their own SSN-AUKUS attack subs, which will leverage American technology. Though the U.K. won’t accept delivery of its first boat until the late 2030s and Australia not until the early 2040s, design efforts led by the U.K. are “relatively mature,” according to Vice Adm. Martin Connell, the Second Sea Lord of the U.K. Royal Navy. Australian representatives from BAE Systems and ASC, formerly called the Australian Submarine Corp. — who will team in a joint venture to build Australia’s SSN-AUKUS boats — have now joined the British design team. Dan Packer, the AUKUS director for the Commander of Naval Submarine Forces, told Defense News SSN-AUKUS (also called SSN-A) is described as a U.K.-designed boat with U.S. technology, but “we are still arm-wrestling over what U.S. technology that means.” Broadly, he explained during an April 4 embark on Virginia-class attack submarine Delaware, SSN-A will have the American nuclear reactor plant and the accompanying American turbine generators — but the parties are now considering whether the boat will have to use the corresponding American turbine generator lube oil, for example. Packer said the SSN-A would use the American combat system, a version of which Australia already uses on its Collins-class conventionally powered submarines. But there are ongoing discussions over whether the boat would use just the American torpedo Australia also buys, or whether it could also launch a separate British torpedo. “Right now, we are in a game of trying to put metrics to which system is better” as the three nations look to create a best-of-breed submarine design. “Everybody wins in the end in this kind of competition.” https://lnkd.in/giwEqVg5

The US Navy has found a solution to scrap the legendary USS Enterprise, the first-ever nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The USS Enterprise, commissioned in 1961, holds a significant place in naval history and served for an impressive 51 years. Now, the Navy is preparing for the retirement of several nuclear-powered carriers, including the Nimitz-class ships. Disposing of nuclear-powered carriers presents unique challenges due to their size and the hazardous waste involved. However, the Navy has formulated a plan to safely dismantle and dispose of the USS Enterprise. The eight de-fueled Westinghouse reactors will be packaged for transit and transported via a specially designed armored train called Atlas to the Hanford site in Washington state. The fuel has already been shipped to the Naval Reactors Facility. This process marks the beginning of a long-term strategy as the Navy anticipates retiring several nuclear-powered carriers in the coming decades. Strict procedures outlined by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be followed, ensuring the safe handling and disposal of the reactors. On July 12, 2024, the French Navy’s latest Barracuda-class submarine, the Tourville, embarked on its first sea trials, marking a significant step in the Barracuda program’s progress. This milestone follows the initial sea trials of its predecessors, the Suffren on April 28, 2020, and the Duguay-Trouin on March 25, 2023. The Tourville is the third submarine in this series, with its delivery expected by the end of 2024. The Tourville, like its Barracuda-class counterparts, is designed to replace the aging Ruby-class submarines currently in service. The Barracuda program, spearheaded by the French General Armament Directorate (DGA) and supported by the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy Commission (CEA) for the nuclear components, is a collaborative effort involving Naval Group and TechnicAtome. Naval Group oversees the entire production process, from design to construction, including the development and production of the nuclear boilers, and provides logistical support and maintenance in Toulon. The Tourville’s sea trials follow the successful commissioning of its nuclear boiler room in April 2024 and comprehensive dock tests conducted since July 2023. These preliminary tests in the integration bay and docks ensured that all equipment and systems were thoroughly evaluated before the submarine’s launch. The Barracuda program is advancing swiftly, with the remaining three submarines—de Grasse, Rubis, and Casabianca—currently at various stages of construction. Each submarine is slated for delivery every two years, with the final vessel expected by 2030.
