What I like about this architecture is the energy storage and the resulting flexibility. A good addition for non-controllable renewable energies.

Thrilled to announce the publication of my latest research, "Mapping the Portrayal of Small Modular Reactors in Canadian Energy Solutions," now available in The Polar Journal. Over the past three years, this project has been a journey of comprehensive data collection, analysis, and persistent refinement. I first presented it online during COVID-19 times at the ArcticNet conference. Focused on addressing energy challenges in the Arctic, the study sheds light on the evolving role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in providing low-carbon solutions. The research focuses on Canada's leadership in SMR development, uncovering the unique challenges and opportunities present in the Arctic region. Notably, the study emphasizes the significance of engaging Indigenous communities in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions. Through the conversations and sessions that we led or participated in during Microgrid Knowledge 2024 in Baltimore last week, there were a few important takeaways. One is a clear reinforcement of the belief that microgrids will play a key role in powering EV charging infrastructure so that the electrification of transportation and its benefits can be realized. And significant EV charging microgrid projects are now being completed, giving market leaders the opportunity to learn through the process. Xendee was proud to lead a session about this along with Prologis, AlphaStruxure, and Arup to help provide a roadmap for others to follow. Charles McCombie Neil Chapman Jake Kinghorn-Mills article in latest Oxford Institute for Energy Studies Energy Forum on Ensuring Safe and Secure Management of Spent Fuel from Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) 👉 Link to OIES Energy Forum: https://lnkd.in/eUbu4HXC Some key points: 🔹 Nuclear community, the public, and media are increasingly looking to SMRs to herald a long-awaited but never yet observed ‘nuclear renaissance’ 🔹 But this will not happen if SMR developers and implementers repeat past mistakes that have blocked nuclear expansion 🔹 Getting the economics of SMRs right and shortening licensing and construction times is essential but these alone will not solve the problem 🔹 Other major challenge that conventional reactor designers ignored until too late was addressing the issue of safe disposal of spent fuel and highly radioactive wastes 🔹 Even today although safe geological disposal facilities are being implemented for example in Finland this is still perceived by many as an objection to expanding #nuclearpower 🔹 Some recommendations that could help remove the waste disposal challenges facing SMR deployment are: 1️⃣ Consideration of spent fuel disposal routes in all proposed SMR designs 2️⃣ Promotion of cooperation in back-end activities between users of SMRs 3️⃣ Encouragement of SMR vendor nations to take back the spent fuel or reactor modules 4️⃣ Encouragement of SMR vendors, SMR users, national nuclear programmes, and international bodies to actively support emerging initiatives for multinational repositories (MNRs) whether through a commercial enterprise or via a partnered approach 🔹 Realizing the promise shown by the new SMRs will depend on ensuring that the safety, security, economics, and sustainability of these systems is guaranteed and for last of these developing and implementing geological disposal solutions is essential #nuclearenergy #smrs #nuclearwaste #decarbonization #energytransition #smallmodularreactors
