Gastroparesis Awareness Month is observed in August every month. It was founded in 2016 by the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders (I.F.F.G.D.), which uses its platform to support the gastroparesis community by raising awareness, promoting education, and encouraging research. Gastroparesis is a chronic condition that affects the digestive system. It is caused by a delay in the emptying of food from the stomach into the small intestine. This condition can lead to a range of symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal pain. The severity of the symptoms can vary from person to person, and it can significantly impact their quality of life. The causes of gastroparesis can be varied, including diabetes, neurological conditions, and surgery. The diagnosis of gastroparesis can be challenging, and it often requires a range of diagnostic tests to confirm the condition. Once diagnosed, the treatment plan for gastroparesis is tailored to the individual's symptoms and may involve a combination of dietary changes, medications, and medical interventions. Gastroparesis Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about this condition and provide support to individuals living with gastroparesis. It is essential to create a supportive community where individuals can share their experiences, find resources, and access emotional support. By raising awareness and advocating for better care and research, we can improve the lives of those affected by gastroparesis. Let us use this month to educate ourselves about gastroparesis and support those living with this condition. #GastroparesisAwarenessMonth #DigestiveHealth #SupportGastroparesis #EmpowermentThroughAwareness

Former White House Medical Officer | Clinician | Strategic Medical Planner | Physician Associate Leader | Adjunct Professor | TS-SCI
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US, claiming countless lives every year. Obesity is a significant risk factor for heart disease, amplifying the likelihood of developing conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes, further escalating the risk of heart complications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 93 million adults in the US are affected by obesity, with approximately 40% of adults and 20% of adolescents classified as obese. The American Heart Association notes that individuals with obesity are at a substantially higher risk of suffering from heart disease compared to those with a healthy weight. Access to comprehensive care for obesity treatment remains a concern, with limited insurance coverage for certain interventions like intensive behavioral counseling. The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act seeks to broaden coverage for obesity treatment, ensuring that patients have access to the multifaceted support they require to combat obesity and reduce their risk of heart disease. Policy changes are necessary to ensure individuals have access to BOTH lifestyle interventions and anti-obesity medications that have the potential to improve the health of many people in the U.S. and are essential to reduce health inequity and disparity! The Academy is proud to join collaborating groups on the Hill today to advocate for the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act on #WorldObesityDay, including American Diabetes Association, Obesity Action Coalition, The Obesity Society, and Obesity Medicine Association and American Society For Metabolic And Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). You can add your support by taking the TROA action alert to tell your members of Congress that comprehensive coverage for obesity treatment must include lifestyle interventions such as intensive behavioral counseling in addition to anti-obesity medications: sm.eatright.org/TROAalert #ObesityCareWeek #eatrightPRO #dietetics #dietitian #nutrition #RDN #NDTR #rdchat

A few months ago, the World Health Organization released new guidelines about artificial sweeteners, also called non-sugar sweeteners (NSS). Namely, people should reduce their use of these products, which have been shown to lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. A recent article published in NEJM Group outlines a number of research studies showing that using artificial sweeteners sucralose and erythritol was found to be associated with detrimental effects on immunity and cardiovascular health.
