"We are on the same team as the media" said Alan Nierob of Rogers & Cowan PMK. Sitting next to Alan as a panellist myself also earlier this week in Monaco, I totally agree with him.
I have always thought since the early days of doing PR, that I really didn't mind talking to journalists and had the confidence to pick up the phone to them. Sometimes I really enjoyed listening to their points of view and learned a lot. Heck then I became a journalist after qualifying in PR!
And all that still stands true today as I still have valuable relationships with journalists every week.
✅ There are many things to admire in journalists:
1) Their opinions and hopefuly most are well read
2) Their no BS attitude
3) Their realiability in meeting deadlines is A-game
4) They live their job 24/7 always abreast of current affairs
5) Their writing prose, grammar and literary skills
6) Their dedication to get to the truth
7) Their ability to listen
8) Their competitiveness
9) Their die-hard attitude to get a story (not all journalists are like that but alot are)
❌ What not to admire
1) Their news agenda is often not coveraging what I'm bothered about! (But that's national TV news and radio, not B2B journalism) (What doesn't get covered daily that I'm bothered about, if you're wondering, is plant based, veganism, animal welfare for all animals, animal racism (speciesism), climate change, spirituality, mental health, vegan fashion or at least fashion that doesn't involve animals eg. cotton and linen, motivation, entrepreneurialism, geography, travel)
If you want to work in PR or are already in PR, realise that the media are not the enemy. You build a relationship with them. Post written by Kerry Hopkins
