Focusing on the competition rarely works out. If every Olympic athlete we just saw in Paris win medals was focused solely on their competition, they wouldn’t have a medal around their necks. Instead, put your energy into your own work and progress. It’s great to look up to others. To learn from the best. To have guides and mentors. To study what others in your field do to be elite. But ultimately, you aren’t competing with them. If you’re looking for a challenge, face the hard truths about yourself that don’t serve you. If you have a dream that cannot be broken down into parts until completion, it is most likely that the quality assurance of the output will struggle. It is better to have an objective that can be broken into parts and the outputs measured. If your dream is to run in the Olympics, you have to be able to break that into parts like – win my college finals, win the state championships, win the regionals, be called for the national trials, excel in the national, represent my country. From these parts, you can attach timelines and metrics like 100 metres in 10 seconds, etc. You cannot move from being a runner to going to Olympics straightaway ~ Uwem Umana

Our 4 x 100 Olympics silver medalist champions in Paris taught us a valuable lesson last night. The three boys Nkoana, Maswanganyi and Walaza understood the important assignment of cheering their leader until finish line. They knew they have done their part but had to do extra more to make sure that Simbini bring the medal home. What Nkoana in particular did to Simbini was magical. He handed the baton to him but never stopped running and cheering him until he overtaken four other sprinters to secure our 1st and only relay 4 x 100 silver medal as RSA and Africa. As leaders a leader in society you need each and every team member to play their part to participate and contribute to the collective organisational results and performance. It ought to be reciprocal between the leader and the people he leads not one way. It remains crucial to support, motivate and back each other until the finish line. Finally the diverse age gap between Simbini 30, Maswanganyi 23, Nkoana 19 and Walaza 18 was used as a motivation by Simbini and not a threat or arrogance towards these young talent. We can also learn as leaders to embrace, acknowledge, welcome, energized these sometimes extra vocal young people to augment and power us to success. It is the HOW you use their energy and passion to convert it in to meanigful success that matters . The Olympics often mirror professional life where the glory is given to the winner and those that medal or those with the highest sales achievement and most strategic goals achieved. For me the Olympics, and our professional lives, should celebrate stories of Perseverance versus Winning. The Olympics offer a masterclass in perseverance. Did you know there are over 10,000 Olympians and only 392 medal events. Folks, that means a whole bunch of people are going home without medals. But are they losers? Failures? I’d agrue no all day long. While they may not take a medal home what they should be taking home is a sense of achievement. Although they may have fallen short of “victory”, they persevered by dusting themselves off and marching onward. They aren’t allowing a loss on a world-wide stage to define their go-forward journey. The aren’t allowing the “worst thing” to be the “last thing”. Friends, celebrate your journey, whatever that may be. Celebrate your personal achievements, dust yourself off and get back on the journey when you trip, and persevere like the Olympian you have inside of you. Don’t allow the “worst thing to be the last thing”!
