In skateboarding, falling is inevitable. You spend most of your time on the ground, scraping your knees, banging a hip, landing on an elbow and falling on your ass, or "Eating Shit" than you do actually upright on your board. But here's the thing, skateboarders take pride in the falls, the bruises, and cuts. We take pride in Eating Shit! It's easy to get caught up in the highlight reels we see on social media, but remember that those are just the lucky shots that actually landed. The difference is that skateboarders know that failure is part of the process. A cast, bandage, or brace is a badge of honor in skating, a fashion statement even. So, my challenge to you today is to embrace the falls, the failures, the bruises, and cuts. Move through your fears, put yourself out there, take some chances, and live to tell the tale. a story about skateboarding, and a lesson in not giving a f*** last summer I was in Venice Beach: one of the best skateboarding communities in the world. picture a bunch of Tony Hawk’s doing crazy shit, and 100s of people watching in amazement. “I’m going to rip the half-pipe” I said, so I went up and stood on the edge. for context: I'm not a skateboarder. I think skateboarding is fun, I skateboard to get from A → B, but I cannot do the skateboard tricks. but being in Venice, I felt inspired to try, so I went up and stood on the edge of the half-pipe. I got to the edge… and something happened: I looked up. I looked at other skaters ripping up the park, I looked at 100s of eyes watching and critiquing, and I chickened out. I’ve thought about this moment for a while: I let the hypothetical thoughts of other people stop me from doing something I really wanted to do. I wanted a chance to redeem myself. then yesterday… we pulled up to a coffee shop, I looked to the right, and there it was: a half-pipe. it wasn’t as big as Venice... but there were skaters skating, and people watching. so I grabbed a skateboard and went to the drop-in, but this time I did something different: I did not focus on other people, I only focussed on “experience.” 🏎️ experiencing the speed of the skateboard; 🔥 the adrenaline of risk; 😡 the frustration of f**ing up; 🏔️ the triumph of getting better. this teleported me into a room by myself; it was almost like I couldn’t see the other people. all of my attention was inward, feeling every single feeling that came up. it was one of the best experiences of my life. I think I experienced unfiltered life for the first time; the thoughts of other people never crossed my mind. so here is my action step moving forward: people say "picture the audience in their underwear." I say forget about the audience entirely. focus internally; on maximizing YOUR experience, and don’t let the thoughts of other people get in the way. #unfiltered

It always fascinates me when my peers look at lateral influences that impact positively on their work and life. This from Christian made me think about the parallel pursuits that facilitate our journey; whether that be painting, playing video games, team sports, stamp collecting, learning a new language, or even skateboarding. Interestingly, Christian leans into continuous improvement, which is a particular mindset that I embrace, yet, the years of practice in skateboarding have undoubtedly taught him much more. As with many of these 'hobbies' or 'pastimes' the reward is far greater - it amplifies our creativity, gives us belief in taking risks and helps us all see those unseen paths. So, I'd say continue that side hustle, 'scratch that itch' or just take a leap into something new, as you too could benefit from heightened skills that: 🗻 Help us overcome obstacles ⏳ Better manage our time 🧠 Increase our patience and a willingness to learn 🌳 Reduce stress 💤 Increase our recovery ✍🏻 Foster productivity and creativity 👀 Gives us different perspectives And then when it comes to everything else there's more clarity, focus and energy to keep on doing.✊🏻 And in terms of my role as Creative Director at Everything Connected, one of the key learnings for me is to always encourage pursuits of happiness as ultimately, happy people help you achieve the impossible!!

A professional since age 14, and still a professional now at age 55, he's also an entrepreneur, business owner, and active philanthropist in the skateboarding community. It's none other than Mr. Tony Hawk.    Tony Hawk is one of the few who probably needs no further introduction or explanation. You've undoubtedly heard his name, synonymous with elite skateboarding. Maybe you grew up watching him compete in the X Games, or you grew up playing his video games. Regardless of whether you think you know Tony Hawk or not, this documentary sheds more light on his life story. I was excited to see Skateboard at the Design Museum before the exhibition closes this weekend. To many, skateboarding can a noisy irritation. To skaters, the pursuit of landing a new trick is a thrilling compulsion. I’ve taken a lot from this sport over the years. It helped me foster a mindset of continuous improvement long before I came across the term in the business world. And creativity is an innate part skateboarding. When you start skating you begin to look out for new spots to skate. The world around becomes an opportunity to subvert the urban landscape into an impromptu skate park. The better you get, the more opportunities you see. Unsurprisingly, professionals take this to the extreme. They see things no one else can. Whether it’s Jeremy Wray jumping a huge gap between two buildings, or Aaron Homoki jumping the Lyon 25 (25 steps!). Outside of design, one of my passions lies in skateboarding. 🛹 I've been skating since I was a kid. It has provided me with many hours of enjoyment but also valuable life lessons, most notably: Facing failure. Setbacks are more frequent than success. Landing a challenging skateboard trick might take years of dedication. It can also be very painful. But the return on investment feels amazing! Reflecting on my growth as a designer, I believe my skateboarding mindset has allowed me to have a strong sense of persistence in pursuing my goals. Whether it's landing a job or landing my first kickflip. The sooner you face failure and embrace it, the easier it will be for you to grow. You can learn so much from it. Growing up skateboarding, I've felt its influence firsthand. Yesterday in Austin, the godfather of skateboarding, Rodney Mullen, delivered a speech that resonated deeply with me and I believe it will with you too. Tony Hawk might have been there also 😅 Mullen delved into the essence of passion, the importance of doing what we love for the sheer joy of it, and how nurturing this passion is one of life's greatest challenges.
