Recently, I connected with Teju Calambakkam, as we are both past recipients of The LAGRANT Foundation's scholarship. She interviewed me for AMA University of South Florida's excellent blog. Check out my interview below, where I discuss how I got into my work, the importance of intersectionality, and my experience as a queer, disabled worker of color. Thank you so much for this opportunity to share my story. #blogpost #interview #interviewing #deia #dei #queer #disabilitypride #equitymatters #storytelling

Examining the impact of banning books on queer parenting in public libraries is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, such actions restrict access to resources that can provide support, representation, and validation for LGBTQ+ parents and their families. Banning books with LGBTQ+ themes or characters can contribute to feelings of isolation, shame, and invisibility among queer parents and their children. We chat with Hank Paul Leading Media Professional Manager with Transgender Victoria about this important area for our webpodast with the Australian Sociological Association Furthermore, censoring materials related to queer parenting reinforces harmful stereotypes, perpetuates discrimination, and hinders efforts towards creating inclusive and accepting communities. It sends a message that LGBTQ+ families are not welcome or deserving of representation in public spaces, including libraries that should serve all members of the community. Understanding and addressing the impact of banning books on queer parenting in public libraries is essential for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. It allows for the recognition of diverse family structures, experiences, and identities, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance for LGBTQ+ individuals and families. By examining the effects of censorship on queer parenting materials, libraries can advocate for intellectual freedom, challenge biases, and promote empathy and understanding among library users.

Take 2 minutes to watch this powerful video 🙏💡👇 ⚠️(Watch before you read the post)⚠️
🚨STOP! Watch the video before you continue reading! 👀 A groundbreaking commercial from France that's making global waves! Created by Orange and Publicis Groupe using their AI platform, this ad challenges gender perceptions in sport. At first glance, it appears to be a men's football promo featuring Les Bleus, France's national men's team, scoring and winning amidst a roaring crowd. 💪 But here's the twist! The real stars are France's women's team, who are skillfully disguised as the men's players, breaking stereotypes and celebrating representation in sports. This campaign empowers women and inspires the next generation to dream big, challenging gender perceptions on sport. The video also: 🙌 Fights Stereotypes: By showcasing women's athletic power, the ad defies harmful stereotypes and proves that talent knows no gender boundaries. 💪 Celebrates Representation: The ad features France's women's team disguised as the men's players, showcasing the importance of visible representation for inspiring the next generation of girls to follow their dreams in sports. 😍 Builds Confidence and Empowerment: Female athletes exude confidence and determination on the field, empowering women everywhere to believe in themselves and break barriers in any field they choose. ⚡ Advocates for Equal Opportunities: This campaign advocates for equal resources and opportunities for both men and women in sports, ensuring that female athletes receive the same level of support. 💫 Inspires Advocacy: Athletes' voices have the power to influence societal change. By standing up for gender equity, they inspire others to join the movement. What a smart and witty use of a global platform to share so many important messages! ⚽️❤️🌟 Watch the original French version here: https://lnkd.in/eX_JsqEv Thank you to CEOs for Gender Equity Mark Stickells for flagging this powerful video with our team! #CEOsforGenderEquity #BreakingBarriers #ChallengingGenderRoles

Hi WACL LinkedIn! 👋 I’m Rebecca, WACL’s Project Manager, and today for International Day of the Girl, I will be taking over WACL’s channels to talk about some of the things we’d like to see get better for women and girls… and more importantly celebrate my own, and my friends, favourite ads that we think are inspirational in the way they help to tackle some of those issues. Gender stereotyping is an issue that is still pervasive, even among my age group. As WACLer Jan Gooding highlighted in her recent article (linked below), an Effie report ‘A Woman's Worth’ showed that ⅓ of Brits still believe that a woman's primary role is to be a good mother and wife. What is even more disheartening is that this statistic is believed more strongly among my age group, 16-24 year olds. Shockingly, it has increased from 24% - 38% in the last decade. So what can advertising do about it? 👊🏻 I’m a Psychology graduate and many of the academic studies I learned about underlined the influence of our attitudes on our behaviours and the degree to which these are based on our early experiences and upbringing. Advertising and brands therefore have a huge role in shaping our attitudes and are disproportionately important for young women and girls. Positive representation really matters - ie not occupying traditional roles or featuring in ads relating to household chores (as 58% of ads still do!) otherwise what girls see on screen will influence what these future leaders grow up to believe. Who’s doing it well? 💥 The first ad I’d like to share is the Orange, la Compil des Bleues, which was released around the 2023 Women’s World Cup and was also WACL’s RepresentMe ad of the month. As a sports enthusiast, this ad resonated with me because of the stereotypes it so cleverly challenges. This ad takes you on a journey, initially, like many other viewers I was lured into assuming the extraordinary skills on show were from the French men’s team. However, what truly captivated me was the genuine shock and excitement I experienced when it was revealed that these skilled players were, in fact (spoiler alert!!), women, but initially presented as men (presumably through the clever use of AI.) This ad brilliantly demonstrates the harmful power of stereotypes and unconscious bias surrounding women’s abilities and performance in sports, perhaps even initially from women ourselves. Please feel free to share some of your favourite inspiring ads too🫶🏼 #InternationalDayofTheGirl #RepresentationMatters Orange, la Compil des Bleues ad: https://lnkd.in/eAGZ_Gmb Jan's article: https://lnkd.in/eqdnkijH
