Boosting your organization's credibility and written communication while saving you time and effort | Editor | Huge Nerd | Language Enthusiast | Relentless Pursuer of Excellence
This is spot on. No editor works alone. Every editing task is teamwork. An editor collaborates with both the writer and the reader (even though the reader isn't usually present) to make sure the message is engaging and accurately understood. I've seen editors write rude and demeaning comments on clients' work, and I've seen editors who are unwilling to admit it when they're wrong. I've also worked with writers who didn't think their content needed editing. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗴𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. The goal is to create the best content possible, but you can't do that if you're focusing on your pet peeves, your feelings, or your reputation instead of on the content. Taking yourself a little less seriously is taking a major step toward excellence.
Hiring writers or editors? Watch for this major red flag in applicants: The writer or editor sees the writer-editor relationship as antagonistic. What do I mean by that? From the editing side, complaints or comments about writers forcing them to go beyond basic copy editing. From the writing side, an indication that editing is an unwelcome phase of the content creation process. The writer-editor relationship is not combat. It's collaboration. #Editors #Writers #Content #Hiring

Our reaction every time an author tries to bargain! 🤐 . . . Jokes apart, sharing some facts: 🔶 Hiring an editor is important irrespective of the type of publishing you are planning for your book. 🔶 Hiring a freelance editor is costly. 🔶 Recommended to start looking around early on in your manuscript so that you can plan the investment in a good editor once the manuscript is ready. This will also help you get an idea about the cost involved and plan a budget. 🔶There is a difference between negotiating, bargaining, and haggling. The first one is always appreciated and respected. . . . ❓Questions related to editing? Share them in the comments or reach out in DM. . . . #WritersLife #EditorsLife #TeamKC #ThursdayVibes #lifeofaneditor

Content Writer and Editor | Content Writing and Editing Services | Serving Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners
Building a relationship with an editor or proofreader, depending on your needs, doesn’t have to be difficult. It starts with reaching out, as you explore the resources they share with you - their blogs, their social media, and mutual connections you might have. Ask questions about their work, what they handle and what they don’t. Ask questions you feel you need to in order to qualify or disqualify that person. When you’re ready, look into setting up a discovery call with them to make sure you’re both on the same page about the work, and have that call. Move on from there. It may seem daunting, this process, but to ensure you’re comfortable and feel you have the best editor for the job, building a relationship is a fabulous way to go! I’m curious. What questions do you usually ask potential editors and proofreaders? #CopyEditor #LineEditing #ContentEditor #BookEditor #ProofreadingService #BlogEditor #WritingUnfiltered #LineEditor #LineEditingService #NonfictionEditor #FictionEditor #WomanOwnedBusiness #IndependentAuthors #SmallBusinessOwner

🔎 It's easy to search online for a #proofreader or #editor, but how do you know they are credible or have the right skills/background for your particular piece of work? 💡 Try searching the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)'s directory instead! Everyone on there has substantial experience and qualifications and is bound by the CIEP's high standards of professional practice. The keyword search also helps you to find those specialising in your area of work. (I am on there – a link to my entry is in the comments 😁)

Do you want a writer who can do these things? Paint pictures with words. Create connections through narrative. Awaken the reader's interests, thoughts, and memories. Then don't hire a copywriter (or a content writer). Hire a creative writer. A narrative writer. A writer whose currency is imagery. Don't know where to find that writer? I know a girl.

As a follow-up to this post, here's a breakdown of how to assess your candidates' potential longevity with your content team. Putting skill level aside, look for whether they'd stay long with your organisation. At least more than 12 months is a good start. Here's why this is important. Going through a folder-load of CVs and writing tests to pick one or two writers can be boring and tedious. This can take weeks and months in some cases. So when you finally pick who fits the bill, you don't want to go back to the trenches in the next 3 months. It actually doesn't end there. When you hire new writers, you put in weeks of training to get them to write the way you want them to write. From docs to reviews to calls to becoming a commenting ninja on Google Docs. Every writer who leaves your team means a new writer you must go through this process with. So get writers who will stay for a long time. At least enough for you to recover from the hassles you went through to hire and train them While everyone will answer yes to "Will you work with us for at least 12 months?" you can check their LinkedIn to see how often they changed jobs. You can also ask your HR team to dig up stuff on them. Are they as humble as they say? No candidate will tell you he/she doesn't take feedback. But really, do they? You can come up with ideas to get a real answer to this. Is the candidate a team player or thinks he/she is better than everyone? If your writer turns out to feel he/she is better than other writers, you and your editors, you're in trouble. If you have a psychologist as the head of marketing (like we do) ask him/her to speak with the candidate and evaluate the person. I hope this helps

What are some of the red flags you look for when hiring writers for your content team? I think one you should definitely look out for is writers who don't stay long in a company. What would you add?
