On March 23, 2005, a series of explosions occurred at the BP Texas City, Texas, refinery during the restarting isomerization unit— killing 15 workers and injuring 180 others. The explosions occurred when a distillation tower flooded with hydrocarbons and was overpressurized, causing a geyser-like release from the vent stack. BP formed the BP U.S. Refineries Independent Safety Review Panel also referred as Banker Panel. Excerpt from the Baker Panel report: “BP has emphasized personal safety in recent years and has achieved significant improvement in personal safety performance but BP did not emphasize process safety. BP mistakenly interpreted improving personal injury rates as an indication of acceptable process safety performance at its U.S. refineries. BP's reliance on this data, combined with an inadequate process safety understanding, created a false sense of confidence that BP was properly addressing process safety risks."

This is an extremely important story, showing a US oil and gas company attempting to influence OPEC+ to manipulate supplies to drive up prices for consumers… In the past, while benefitting hugely from OPEC’s cartel extortion, Western oil and gas companies have said “nothing to do with us”, while taking in billions of dollars of windfall profits. Now it appears that there may be a “smoking gun” showing active efforts to collude with or instigate the blackmail. Thanks Justin Mikulka from bringing this story to my feed… I’ve added the FTC’s link since the news article is behind a paywall… it makes for some shocking reading. This in the week where a Congressional report has released thousands of documents detailing the misinformation on climate change and active sabotage of decarbonisation by Big Oil. Just how much evidence do we need that oil and gas businesses are not serving their communities but are simply driven by greed. As we learn more about the lies from the people at the top of the American oil industry, perhaps more people will realize that unlike what they say, these CEOs don't care about the American people. I wrote about this recently in a piece called Exxon vs. America. And now as part of the Exxon deal to acquire Pioneer we learn more about how American oil company CEOs don't care about America if that gets in the way of adding to their already massive personal wealth. Or do most Americans think it's ok for a U.S. oil company CEO to collude with the Saudis to keep oil prices high? "The Federal Trade Commission is set to allege as soon as this week that Sheffield engaged in collusive activity that could have raised the price of oil, these people said. The allegations will include that Sheffield sent hundreds of messages to representatives of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries about market dynamics, including pricing and production levels." I've been following Sheffield for quite a while so this doesn't surprise me in the least.
