It’s the International Day of the World’s #IndigenousPeoples, a day to focus on global efforts to protect the rights of vulnerable communities and protected groups ⚖️👥 It is essential, therefore, that organizations understand and manage how their operations & activities impact on Indigenous Peoples. The #GRIStandards 📝 which set reporting expectations that are aligned with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, are here to help: ✅ #GRI411 Rights of Indigenous Peoples should be used for disclosing violation incidents, including review and remediation actions. ✅ #GRI101 Biodiversity includes location-specific reporting on how operations impact on Indigenous Peoples and local communities. ✅ #GRI11 Oil & Gas, #GRI12 Coal, #GRI13 Agriculture, Aquaculture & Fishing, and #GRI14 Mining all identify impacts on Indigenous Peoples as a likely material topic for companies in these sectors. Acknowledging the rights of Indigenous Peoples requires more than adherence to standards; it demands a deep engagement with the ethical and cultural imperatives that define our shared future. The GRI Standards, especially GRI 411, provide a structured approach to reporting on these critical issues, reflecting an evolving recognition of Indigenous sovereignty and environmental responsibility. Yet, the real impact lies in the authenticity of organisational commitment—where disclosure is paired with meaningful actions that honour Indigenous knowledge systems and uphold their right to self-determination. This approach is essential for advancing justice and sustainability in our global operations.
