Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) must not be abused as a PR / Marketing stunt and should absolutely not be proposed in locations that put our nation's most valuable, natural water producing assets at risk. The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) supports 120 regional communities, agriculture, small business, a broad range of industries along with an incredible array of biodiversity. It is the envy of the world, and it is our responsibility to protect the GAB for future generations. CTSCo's CCS proposal would see liquified CO2 injected into a usable, water producing GAB aquifer resulting in contamination of the water and the mobilization of heavy metals including arsenic and lead into the aquifer. Injecting highly acidic CO2 waste into a usable water supply aquifer is utter madness. Water is the most precious resource on this planet, and especially so in arid outback Qld. The Great Artesian Basin is a natural wonder of the world; a gift of immeasurable proportions, giving life to inland regional communities that could not survive without it. To put our shared groundwater resources at jeopardy, while disregarding the precautionary principle, is conceivable malfeasance by the authorities that allow these risks to occur, whether that be #CCS or #CSG. Intergenerational equity should never be disregarded or shrugged off as someone else's concern. It is the shared responsibility of everyone alive today to ensure our next generations are able to exist sustainably as we are able to do today. Failure to do so amounts to selfish short-term conduct at the expense of our children & their children's futures.
QFF and other industry groups, community organisations and scientific experts continue to rally against a proposed carbon capture and storage (CCS) project from Carbon Transport and Storage Corporation Pty Ltd (CTSCo), a subsidiary company of Glencore, which seeks to inject liquified carbon dioxide into a water producing aquifer within the Great Artesian Basin (GAB). Modelling contained in a University of Queensland report attached in section 9C of CTSCo's Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) presents a clear picture of the threat.
