Good to see this coalition of the willing forming to make the case for advanced manufacturing: it is unimpeachable from an economic, security and sustainability perspective. And with an election in the offing, it is also good politics. This about more than an industrial strategy. Its about rebuilding the manufacturing capabilities of the nation. Biden has provided the model: a clear plan laid out in a Congressional Act backed by all parties.

Today, the Government published the #advancedmanufacturing plan, setting out robust actions to ensure that the UK remains the best place in the world to start and grow a manufacturing business. These include: 1. investing in the future of manufacturing by extending and building on our successful programmes to 2030, and forging partnerships with businesses to support market-led investment in innovation and research and development (R&D) including £975 million of funding for the UK #aerospace sector through the Aerospace Technology Institute. 2. cooperating internationally and increasing UK capability to build supply chain resilience, boost economic security and ensure our sectors have access to the goods that drive prosperity. 3. reducing costs and removing barriers to boost #competitiveness and ensure the UK retains its attractiveness to international investors in the long term. These welcome measures are critical to UK industry to remain competitive and compete internationally on a level-playing field. Things are starting to look a little brighter for #ukmanufacturing. Another great update regarding where we currently stand and how government is making moves in the right direction. Though there is much more to be done for SME's. Please share your thoughts, I am eager to know what the manufacturing community thinks? #shoutaboutukmfg #supportukmfg

UPDATE – Campaign for a dedicated Minister for Manufacturing! We finally have a “PLAN.” Not a strategy, but a PLAN for ADVANCED manufacturing. We lost the term “STRATEGIC” this time but there certainly seems to be a strategic approach within the new Advanced Manufacturing Plan announced by Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch last weekend. You can read the full details here – https://lnkd.in/gzHShH2C Whatever our opinions as to the sincerity or longevity of these recent announcements, industry leaders from across the UK have welcomed the win after tirelessly lobbying for this. Thank you to everyone in and around #ukmanufacturing who joined in the call and made this happen! Kemi Badenoch wrote: “As the prime minister and chancellor set out this week, our approach is built on conviction — businesses drive economic growth, not government. “Secure supply chains are also at the heart of the Advanced Manufacturing Plan. Prosperity built on sand is not prosperity at all. Whether it is batteries, minerals, or essential components of finished goods, our plan will work to safeguard the affordable supply of materials critical to manufacturing." Stephen Phipson CBE, CEO of Make UK said: “Make UK and industry will continue to work with the government on the practicalities of this plan, including how to incorporate #manufacturing supply chains. These supply chains have a key role in supplying components and services for clean energy in the future low-carbon economy and we must ensure that the full potential is delivered to enable our companies to compete on the global stage.” Brian Holliday, MD of Digital Industries at Siemens said, “The new investment clearly says that UK manufacturing matters. “Key sectors benefit but so does the long tail of small and medium firms which is really important to directly address our recent challenges of weak overall productivity and investment. So, Kemi Badenoch, Jeremy Hunt and your trusted advisors, the question is: - Will the voices of the SME Supply Chain be heard in the forming of future policy and contribute to the further development of the plan and associated industry specific “strategies?” I’m not convinced yet.....but it’s a start..?! How do we build on this success and ensure that our voice is included, our opinions heard, and guarantee that the "S in SME’s" receive some of the benefits promised to us within this new plan…? Based on the policy wins we’ve seen from Make UK and the Confederation of British Metalforming (CBM) in the Autumn Statement, is our best route to lobby our trade associations for better representation for SME’s? Thoughts please! Please don’t forget….for all your good news, best practice, and general promotion of this fantastic industry – PLEASE USE THE # BELOW…. #shoutaboutukmfg – positive news #supportukmfg – activity promoting engineering and manufacturing #ukmanufacturing – promoting our amazing industry
