Mind = BLOWN 🤯 Did you know there's actually MORE than a 24-hour difference between the first and last places on Earth to celebrate New Year's Eve? 🤯 Here's the crazy thing: while the Earth is divided into 24 time zones (roughly an hour difference between each), there's also the International Date Line (IDL) which zigzags its way through the Pacific Ocean. This line isn't just about time zones - crossing it means you literally jump a whole day forward (eastbound) or backward (westbound). 🤯 Who came up with this? In 1884 at the International Meridian Conference to keep the world's timekeeping somewhat sane. So, picture this: while people in Kiribati are popping champagne at midnight on January 1st, those celebrating in Baker Island and Howland Island are still clinking glasses at 10 pm on December 30th! Even though these locations are geographically close, the IDL creates a whopping 26-hour time difference. 🤯 #timezones #internationaldateline #newyearseve #trivia #mindblown #history

Today, on the International Day of Monuments and Sites, we turn our focus to 'Disasters & Conflicts Through the Lens of the Venice Charter.' 🔍The day was first celebrated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1983. 🔍The Venice Charter is a set of guidelines, drawn up in 1964 by a group of conservation professionals in Venice, that provides an international framework for the conservation and restoration of historic buildings. Six decades later, we face a climate emergency, a growing number of natural disasters as well as conflicts destroying cultural sites and displacing communities on a massive scale. Let’s celebrate this special day to raise awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve historical sites and monuments for future generations. #heritagemanagement #heritage #culturalheritagemanagement #culturalheritage #heritagenation #culture #heritagemanagementorganization #intangibleculturalheritage #unite4heritage #heritage4generations

In our increasingly fragmented world, many of us long for community and for the feelings of safety and strength that we can find within them. The best communities are interwoven with deep connections of mutual support, able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions. They are resilient, complex, and strong—just like nature. Nature excels at building resilience, formed and adapted over time in ecological layers of evolutionary successes. The best of human cultures live this way, too, and maintain these bonds. We find this regularly in our work with island and coastal communities, which are closely tied not only to each other but also to the ocean, the land, and the seasons.
