TAKE ACTION: HIAS needs you to tell the Senate that it's asylum seekers *and* humanitarian aid! The Senate last night released language for a bill that pits humanitarian aid against several critical ways to seek asylum. This proposal prevents most people from accessing their legal right to seek asylum in the following ways: - Capping the number of people allowed to ask for asylum and shutting down the border to everyone else - Heightening screening standards for asylum seekers to ensure few will meet them - Denying people the right to appeal their decision, even after not having legal representation We need serious comprehensive immigration reform, not politicizing a critical human - and legal! - right established in the wake of the Holocaust. By the end of 2022, the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency reported that 108.4 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and climate change. More than 1 in every 74 people on Earth has been forced to flee. Spanning history, humans have always been on the move, but an unspoken caste system dictates who is able to move freely and those who are not. We continue to bear witness to governments seeking to turn their back on refugees, amending immigration laws that dismantle key aspects of existing asylum and refugee protections. This dangerous rhetoric labelling refugees as criminals only adds fuel to growing xenophobia. Media have played an important role in framing the public debate on the “refugee crisis”. Refugees and migrants are often portrayed as an undistinguishable group of unskilled outsiders who are either vulnerable or dangerous, with evident narratives of fear playing out in public discourse. Refugees are protected under international law and have specific rights and entitlements, such as the right to seek asylum, to not be returned to their home country if it puts their life in danger, and to receive basic necessities such as food, shelter, and medical care. Refugees may be resettled in a third country if they cannot safely return to their home country or be integrated into the country where they first sought asylum. As citizens of the planet, we are all equal in the eyes of God, inequalities are man made and political, so here i stand saying # fuck the law # fuck politics. Immigration and refugees bring with them both challenges and opportunities. While it is important to recognise and address the challenges, it is also important to embrace the opportunities that immigration and refugees bring. By working together and creating effective policies and support systems, we can create a more welcoming and inclusive world for all.

In October 2023 the Refugee and Migrant Children’s Consortium hosted a conference at Coram on the Illegal Migration Act, local authorities and separated children. The conference, which was attended by professionals from across local government and the children’s and immigration sectors, looked at: - which children would be affected by the Illegal Migration Act, in what timeframes, and how they would be affected - how best to support children and young people impacted by the Act, and - legal challenges in this area and how people can contribute to challenging this legislation and the surrounding policy. #FamilyLaw #IllegalMigrationAct #Migration

To be honest, all the different suggestions on how to better manage migration and at the same time care about refugee protection didn‘t always seem easy to understand.
